I love this site and have been reading it non stop for a very long time. Because of the beauty of design, length of series, varieties and especially the rich US history tied to the coin, I began my journey yesterday with my first Seated Liberty half dollar. I purchased what was graded as, and I agreed with, a VF30. Its a 1857 O, and I believe it has problem free surfaces. I wjust wanted to introduce myself and say thanks ahead of time for any help. Will work on posting a picture.

Vernie! You picked a wonderful series to start your collecting, and you also picked an awesome group of people to share your journey with! Looking forward to MANY pics from you of the Seated Half and whatever you choose to purchase afterward. Enjoy the journey!

Vernie I look forward to viewing your pictures. Many of us are half dollar collectors. I have draped bust halfs and bust halfs in my collection and I'm thinking about adding some seated halfs.

How does that saying go? "One step forward, two steps back"? Something came up and I needed the money... I had to sell the seated.
Not a huge deal. Some things are just more important than collecting coins.
The thing that really bugs me is that I was only able to get half of what I paid. I understand retail, but that stinks.
What I have realized is that maybe this one uneducated purchase will be beneficial.
My journey now consists of reading, reading, reading. I will be researching and reading everything I can get my hands on before I buy another seated.
Kind of depressing, but now its time to get to work and prepare myself to be an educated collector.
Sorry I never got a picture up. Hopefully my next purchase comes before too long and I will definetely share!

Next time you "need to sell" you could try and post it here (after you have the requesit number of posts of course) don't want to break the rules! I'm sure there are a few CCF members that would pay less than retail but still a fair price to get a great coin at a great price. Did you shop around.

Nice type of coins to start with but not exactly a cheap series. All are fairly expensive. Have fun.

Sorry, Vernie. That was quite a haircut you had to take. There is almost never any guarantee that you will be able to sell a coin for what you paid for it or more, but as time goes on and you learn more, you WILL be able to minimize losses and probably turn a profit here and there.
If it was a fire sale situation, well, that happens. Been there. Can't change it now. Looking forward to your continued participation here. Don't ever hesitate to post pictures here to get some really good opinions on buy/sell prices. Good luck.
