My dad recently picked up one of his first colonials... a 1787 New Jersey copper. He's coming from the ancient's side of coin collecting, so he is still getting versed in grading US issues. Of course, colonials are even tougher than most US coins.

What are your thoughts on this one? Grade/price seem to match what the seller listed it as? Any worries on authenticity?

Also - where is a good place (other than heritage) to learn about grading colonials? There are so many weak struck coins out there that it's easy to get strike and wear mixed up on these it seems like.

Thanks for looking!

I do see a few dings in it - and a little bit of green in the reverse ding.. Not sure i'd call it corroded though? Thoughts?

The coin is authentic, just slightly off center as some of these were struck.
Looks to grade in the XF range with a combination of wear and strike weakness.
The 43-d is considered a very common type and I suspect the seller sold it at that price, thinking the slight off centerness is rare...$995 is a hefty price for this coin IMHO.
It does have great eye appeal and a nice planchet free of really any defects or imperfections.

I saw a sale price of $525, which isn't bad at all for this one.

NDU is a great resource for Colonial coin information. I use their resources often.

I really don't know of any full time dealers that specifically specialize in Colonials, usually those dealers who specialize in old copper, such as Tom Reynolds, will have a few Colonials for sale, along with his gorgeous Large Cents and Half Cents.
