Awesome idea, I've been doing this this last couple of months, but just saw this thread. I'll get a bank roll, keep the ones I like and spend the rest. I've used them mostly for lunch money when I eat out at work. Most of the clerks aren't even fazed; some are fascinated, some are skeptical (but still accept them) and a few are excited to trade them out of the register and take them home.

I haven''t been keeping precise records, but I know I have gone through at least three rolls of dollars in Lincoln, NE...so....

I'm a Canadian so spending "Yank" halves is a touch more difficult but today I found an opportunity... my LCS has auctions on their website and I managed to win one 10 cent newfie and 3 50 cent newfie coins. If you win the auction they automatically charge in USD (even though they're CDN as well) but will convert on the day of confirmed payment. Needless to say I asked if I could come in and pay using U.S. halves... they said that would be fine..

So...

Yesterday, A rare eposide of me spending SBA:

$2 in a campus parking meter, which was a waste because campus is closed on Friday!

$4 for a late (3:30) lunch at the mall

Edit: $74000 to go, and I met a plateau value.

This is a great thread! I can't contribute to it (until my next holiday in the States) but on a previous trip I paid for a coffee on the Durango-Silverton steam train in Colorado in JFK halves (the bar car attendant seemed pleased to get them), and I used an SBA dollar to buy a small bar of Hersheys somewhere - it was examined VERY closely by the shop assistant before I got my change!

When our £1 coin came out in 1983 I used to get bags of them from the banks and spend them. They were very rare for a couple of years (just like halves and dollar coins in the US), until the Bank of England stopped printing the £1 note...

And four, plus a Presidential dollar (and ten dimes) to buy 1 1/9 gallons of gasoline at a station where my card wouldn't work, aargh.
