Looks like its possibly a 3. Nice find - potentially.

My guess corroded, cleaned, maybe genuine.

The pic is not sharp enought to be certain.
The marks in the date area resemble a 3, but the angles appear different from those in a 1923S.
I don't think it would grade.

Here are close-up images of the date area of this mystery coin and a 1923 SLQ in AU grade. I tried to get the scaling equal for the two photos. The possible partial 3 on the mystery coin seems to be in exactly the right position as compared with the known 1923. The chance the worn coin is really a 1923-S seems to be pretty good. Any further thoughts?

I've owned several low grade 23-s quarters before....and I would say about a 98% chance it is the real deal. The wear pattern is correct, and the remaining detail mimics the shape of ones I used to own.
NGC won't slab it, but I bet anacs will.

First off, when it comes to SLQ's, johnny54321 is the man! Second, I agree, ANACS would be best for authentication of this coin.

I don't see a TPG authenticating this quarter as a 1923 s. I recall another 1923 s that someone here had that was much clearer in the 3 but it was returned unreadable date. Still I would fill my hole with this example.

Quote:Would acetone help reveal the date, as in Buffalo nickels? Probably not. Acetone would remove organic materials like nail polish, lacquer, and most paints and adhesives. Cleaning of any kind is likely to make the date LESS clear since it could remove the slight dark color over the date that gives the partial digit some contrast. Dates on Buffalo nickels can be "restored" using acids like vinegar or the Nic-A-Date product. These treatments dissolve metal from the copper-nickel surface. To the best of my knowledge no one has come up with a similar technique that works on the silver alloy of Standing Liberty quarters.

I spoke with customer service at ANACS and they suggested I send them some photos (which I did). They reported back that in the grader's opinion the coin was a 1923-S and was likely gradable. No promises of course but it sounds like it's worth sending this one in.
ANACS may not update their pop report very often but they responded very quickly to me today. Nice service!
