Not sure if this is correct forum. I have a few gold coins and was looking on-line today and found that this one might be quite valuable. One company wants it shipped. I have no experience with coins and I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions. Photos taken with natural window light. Edited by Lulu 04/12/2012 01:45 am

Sorry Lulu, I've never seen a gold coin that looks anything like that (patina, not design).
I suggest you weigh it and do a magnet test to see if we can confirm it is a (very nice!) counterfeit.
Gold does not "tone", meaning the color should be uniform across the entire coin, and the edge denticles look all wrong (to start). I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Actually, old gold coins such as this one, can and DO tone, but not very much, due the the 10% copper alloy in them. However, an obviously toned toned old gold coin still has that rich look of gold about it.
If this coin was photographed in natural light, I have to say that the pictures presented here look very coppery.
Because of this, to ask about the weight is a very valid question.

It's 9 grams and is not attracted to a magnet. My dad got this and a bunch of other coins in the 1940's from his father. It has more shine to it when the light is on it.

More research...my head is spinning. I think this might be a draped bust because of the weight. The capped and draped both look the same to me? It is about 25mm across.

Welcome to Coin Community, Lulu. This is quite the entrance. This is an 1804 Half Eagle. The large, blunt-topped 1 and small 4 in the date, along with the die crack starting at the bottom of the coin and going upwards through the zero (you might find it completely bisecting the coin) are characteristic of the Breen-6443, a known variety of this issue. Rather hard to counterfeit. I see no reason to doubt the color, although it may have suffered a cleaning in the past. It is imperative that this coin be examined and authenticated by one of the reputable American Third-Party Graders - preferably PCGS - if you ever wish to sell it. I won't firmly pronounce it real just from (admittedly nice) photos, but it sure looks like it to me. As a rough number, I think this one would bring US$5000 in a PCGS slab. Like I said, nice entrance.

This is a truly rare coin to have survived in such nice condition. If it is genuine, and I think it is, you have a tremendous piece.

As stated, this is a potentially valuable piece and needs to be authenticated by experts. These coins weren't all that expensive in the '40s and '50s and it is plausible that your grandpa didn't have to pay much over face value to get them. The color is dark for a gold coin but still within the range of acceptable. Important: DO NOT CLEAN this coin or otherwise try to "improve" its appearance. If it is real any cleaning attempt could drop its value by THOUSANDS of dollars!I suggest you contact Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) to discuss your options for submitting this coin (and maybe those other "few gold coins" you mentioned). Expect to pay well over $50 each for the grading service. This cost will be repaid many times over by the increase in potential selling price if the coin is judged authentic and undamaged. You can call PCGS at 949-833-0600 and/or check out their website at http://www.pcgs.com. Please post those other coins if you can. Congratulations on your ownership of what looks like a terrific, historic, and valuable coin!

You could also send this to NGC which is another top grading company.

The color looks off for being a gold coin. I would say get it authenticated to know for sure, and those guys won't be shy if you have a fake on your hands. It will be a stunning coin if it holds true.
