So I have two questions:

First, what would you grade this coin?

Second, what would be the best way about getting the gunk off of the obverse. It looks like it is on the surface and not actually from the coin itself. Would a quick bath in acetone work or would I be better suited doing a 30 second rub with Verdicare?

Any opinions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Without the black gunk, I would give it VF-25

1866 Indians hard to find in fairly good condition.

If that gunk isn't soft I doubt anything will remove it

I would say VF30. Try giving it a bath in Acetone.

I suspect your F-VF details coins has some serious verdigris problems. There are preparations used to remove it. The area underneath is probably scarred. The coin would look better without it but that is your call.

Is that in a PCGS slab? Genuine grade I hope, I don't think they would have given it a numerical grade in its current state.

Nope, this came from my dads collection in a whitman album. I took it out and put it in an airtite. I'm going to try some acetone on it and I'll post new pictures if it changes
