Hi all, I've been excited all night and today, because I found a what I believe to be a genuine 1909s vdb penny in a ten pound lot of unsearched wheat pennies that I picked up for $78. my pictures are crude, I used a magnifying glass and a camera, lol.

i had started a thread in the coin roll hunting forum, but someone suggested I repost my story in the modern coin forum.

I would love to hear any ideas as to which TPG I should consider sending it to for authentication, or if it is even necessary. Thanks

Well, considering it's a popularly-counterfeited, $500+ coin....yeah, I'd say authentication and slabbing is pretty much essential. PCGS would be best for resale but any of the big 4 can reliably authenticate it. Are you familiar with the diagnostics of a real S/VDB?

Great find. Congratulations!
It needs to be certified. ANACS would work. Welcome drugis :)

If its the real deal, that's an awesome find ! Even if it's counterfeit, it would be cool to keep as a souvenir.

Thank you all for the comments, I am familiar with the diagnostics and have determined it is a die number four strike, I am taking it to two dealers, one tomorrow, for their opinion and I will post his thoughts if any.

That would be an amazing find if authentic.

Looking forward to your report after visiting the dealers.

For me ... even if they say authentic ... I would send to one of the top-3 TPG to be sure ... unless the local dealer offers you grade appropriate $$.

Nice find, you should definitely send that to graded if the dealers think its authentic. Even in that grade its still a pricey coin. Let us know what it is if you decide to grade it.

Thanks again for all the responses. Took the coin to a dealer yesterday, he says it is absolutely genuine, and he is submitting it to NGC for grading for me! I bought the ten pound lot of wheats from an antique shop, and I will be going to buy whatever they have left!
