Hi we are due to visit the States in Aug. Last year when we went to Florida, my son (the collector age 10) had a great time going to the banks trying to get all the state and more recent America the Beautiful Quarters. What other coins should he be looking out for? I know this is a very generic question, but due to cash controls (ie his pocket money!) the coins will be from general circulation and being picked up from banks. He got a copy of the Red Book for Christmas, but any other tips would be gratefully received. Thanks

there is the Presidential dollar collection, I've received a few in my change one time up here in Canada so they must be common in the states.

2009 US minatages of all types. That was the lowest-production year in decades due to the recession and all sorts of older hoarded coins being cashed back into circulation. The Jefferson nickel had its' lowest production since 1955; the Roosevelt dime it's lowest production since the 1940's. There's a nice set of 4 types of Lincoln Cents in that year, the scarcest of which is the 4th design - the Presidential coin with the US Capitol on the reverse. Any Kennedy half newer than 2001, especially 2007 and newer. Production went down drastically then, and if there is a "sleeper" among Modern US coinage, this is the one. 2008 Sacagawea dollars. Again, the lowest production of the series and far overshadowed by the Presidential dollars. One more thing - if your trip allows, Coin Community will have a booth at the 2012 World's Fair of Money in Philadelphia from August 7-11. It is the largest coin show in the country this year, and we'll be a part of it, welcoming CCF members from all over.

Thanks for the tips. We are flying into New York on the 7th August so will try and swing by the coin fair (10 year old's response "That's sick" - which is, I gather, modern talk for that is good.

Depends on what his fancy is. Old, shiny, or a certain value (dimes, quarters, etc) In MY area of NC which is very rural, it is hit & miss with luck lately. My faves are pennies & halves (50 cent pieces). Depending on where you go, in my opinion, those are the most fun.
If he wants to be serious, pick one or two denominations and stick with those so he can get into a rhythm of what he wants to keep. Ask also for wrappers to re-wrap the ones he does not want to keep so he can exchange them. I have yet to find a bank to charge for them, and they are usually generous w/wrappers.
Also, I think investing in a current issue of a coin magazine would be a good idea along with maybe a book that is an introduction to modern coin collecting.
I hope you keep us posted. I enjoy hearing of people's luck finds, it keeps me going when my luck is not so great (like right now, I'm in a 2 month slump).

Hi KLS, thanks for the helpful suggestions. Re denomination at the moment he is a little indiscriminate - just likes the designs and wants to get the best ones! Thanks to the forum we have now an Ike Type 2 on the list! I know what you mean about not finding stuff, over in the UK there are 29 50p coins celebrating the Olympics - we have 28! Getting £500 out the bank every week for last few months but.....
