This morning I was browsing through the "unsolds" for a recent online auction and picked up this halfpenny of George III. No one had bid on it and maybe no one even looked at it.

Looks like it is from the 1770s.

I'd like to say "cool error" but I have some reservations.

First of all I don't like the way his name looks. Letters need to be spread more apart and not so irregular, "R" looks totally wrong and it's not supposed to play footsy with "G".

Second, the "fingerprint" patch of hair looks wrong.

The bottom stand of the shield looks too crude as well.

I'd say a forger was testing/playing with his toy. Just my opinion.

Looks like a failed attempt at a contemporary counterfeit to me, interesting nevertheless.

Yes I agree, you guys are right. It is very crude and most likely a contemporary counterfeit. I will be looking at counterfeits closely now just to see if I can find a correctly struck one from the same dies to go with it.

It is worth conducting a small study of contemporary countrfeits of this period, if you get enough of them. Include them in a collection of tokens of the same period.
I collect silver tokens of around the 1811 date.

Good advice. The contemporary counterfeits look very interesting. I am headed down that path.

Agreed! A contemporary conterfeit.

These (the normally made ones and the errors) are hotly sought be a small group of collectors.

This one will easily bring $200 on ebay, should they see it.
