message from ebay, wonder how much the TPGs are paying to be the only "authorized" graders? and poor asyn (!) As coin collecting continues to grow and thrive on ebay, customers have told us time and again that knowing they can buy and sell with confidence is important. We'll be updating ebay's Stamps, currency, and coins policy to help foster that confidence--this update may impact your coin listings. Starting May 30, all new listings and relistings in coin categories will need to meet the following requirements: •First, listings for coins will be allowed to include a numeric grade in their listing title or item description only if the coin grading company meets certain objective standards.* Coins that haven't been graded by these companies will be considered raw or ungraded. Currently, ebay has determined that only the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) meet these standards. •Second, for US coins only, grading by companies meeting these standards will now be required for all coins listed with a Buy It Now, reserve, or start price of $2,500 and above. Good 'Til Cancelled listings will have until June 30th to comply with the revised policy. Listings that don't comply by these dates will be ineligible for relist or renewal and will be removed. We've heard from both buyers and sellers that they'd like to see more coins on ebay graded by companies who meet high standards. These new requirements are an important step toward meeting these marketplace demands. Take action now to ensure your listings comply with these new changes. As always, thank you for selling on ebay, ebay Selling Team *These standards will be posted on ebay's website shortly.

Seems more good than bad. Will be a bit more work for me as a buyer looking to upgrade some of my coins though. Will have to go into each listing and bring up the picture instead of just saying 'Oh, it's only listed as an F12 and I already have a VF20 so moving on'.

Not likely to have any effect on Canadian coins on ebay.com, ICCS is not an approved TPG,yet they can be listed on ebay.com with a numerical grade. This is STRANGE,the forum will not let me enter ebay(dot)ca no matter how many times I try to edit. Please self edit and replace ebay.com with ebay(dot)ca.

Below is a reply to a forum post I commented on a few days ago reguarding PCGS and SEGS certification services... While I believe PCGS is one of the tops for well made counterfeit coin detection (as is ANACS), my loyalty pretty much ends there... Since most people believe that PCGS is the top, #1 grading service available, you need to know that it is only their opinion (nothing more), and your purchasing the coin (reguardless of who geaded it), and not the holder... Many dealers will submit the SAME coin MULTIPLE times in hopes of receiving a 1 or 2 point higher grade, and when they do receive the higher grade, they sell it... My personal opinion is that whoever purchased the coin had just received a lower grade coin then what the PCGS (and NGC) holder displays... (There is one rare coin that was certified five times by PCGS & NGC that received a AU-58, the 6th certification (PCGS) returned their previously graded AU-58 back as a MS-61, now worth a huge premium)... https://goccf.com/t/116590

So, where does that leave Canadian TPG's and listings on ebay.com? or any other ebay. X?

I'm not sure what Grading Certification Services are available in Canada... As for ebay, I stopped selling there back in April 2006 when my ebay coin store was hacked into and both ebay and PayPal refused to give me the necessary information so I could pursue legal action against the hackers (they had broken into my ebay & PayPal Account and Personal Bank Account), plus listed items to numerous to list here as items I was selling... Both ebay and Paypals response was that they could not provide any personal information due to legal privacy issues... COINGIRL, I posted my email address on one of your threads about error coins... I have yet to start re-photoing all my errors as I know it will take me a couple weeks to complete everything...

I understand their intent, but I cannot see how it is justified. By virtue of saying only two private companies are "acceptable" seems wrong. TPG's are a matter of preference to the individual buyer. Are not people who buy on ebay (and I am one of them occasionally) doing so at their own risk, which is a risk / choice that each individual makes? Perhaps a better way for them to do it would be to poll the respective numismatic associations ( RCNA & ANA) for a list of TPG's they consider to be of acceptable merit and go with those?

These changes are only for US coins. Canadian "raw" coins (raw, ICCS, CCCS, non-PCGS/NGC graded) can be listed on ebay with a numerical grade in the title/description only on dot ca, not not com. Business as usual for asyn and others who sell mainly (only?) Canadian coins.

Has there been a thread on the comparative quality of the grading of Canadian coins from the main US-based TPG? Opinions?
