So I decided to pick up a 25$ box of pennies to see if I could find any of the key 1920s dates I'm looking for. I was expecting to find mostly pennies from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s but instead everything in my box was 30s,40s,50s,60s and only a very small amount of 1970, few 1980s and only 10 coins out of 2500 from the 2000s...I found it very strange. Why is this?

Here is a picture of what I mean:

From left to right those piles are 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s...

All of the 30s pile is 1937, 1938, 1939, almost like the George V pennies had been removed?

I did find 2 rolls worth of 1967 pennies and these ones that were in good shape:

A lot of nice uncirculated even maybe some MS 1960s and 70s coins:

And lastly I did find 1 George V penny, its a 1929 but it has some damage.

The other 3 pennies in this picture seem to be very deep, the edges of the coin are much higher than they should be, what is this?

Any thoughts about this box? Why so many 30s,40s,50s,60s but no George V and nothing recent?

Thanks!

Lucky find. Are you going to look for errors and varieties?

Nevalite, to the Forums

Looks like someone is getting rid of their pennies, you just happened upon a bunch that someone dumped.

Nice finds.

Check also for date doubling varieties in the George VI series (1937-1952). Some of them are quite scarce...

YIKES !.......................
Whew, they're still there.

I just ran and checked my stash to see if my wife cashed in a bunch of my rolls to buy some new shoes.

Lucky find, Nevalite. Looks like someone might have paid their income tax with cents. Probably dumped a wheelbarrow full on the taxman's desk.

Until my Charlton arrives is there a list somewhere of all the varieties I should be looking for? So far I know of:

1947: Maple leaf blunt 7/pointed 7
1948: A to denticle, A off denticle, A to small denticle, Cracked die under king
1949: A to denticle, A off denticle
1952: double 952

What else should I be looking for?

So I went through the 1940s and 1950s coins and found the following:

18x 1947 Maple Leaf Blunt 7
17x 1947 Maple Leaf Sharp 7
6x 1948 A off Denticles
11x 1948 A to Denticles
14x 1949 A off Denticles
1x 1949 A to Denticles, seen here http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/.../1949a2d.png
5x 1953 SF

Lots of 1953 NSFs, 1954 SFs and 1955 SFs, unfortunately no 1954 or 1955 NSF :(

I must say it has been a lot of fun learning the different errors and for my first box I think I could not ask for more. Now I need to decide what to do with all the 1940s and 1950s pennies. I have extracted anything that has any value I think I will just re-roll the most of it and cash it to get another box.
