I'm giving up on searching half dollars, so I'm thinking on going after $2 bills to give myself something else to ask for at the bank.

With coins, a set of a type usually consists of each combination of date, mintmark and major sub-type. What constitutes a "set" to most collectors for modern currency? One per series? One per FRB? By treasury secretary? Treasurer? Print run? Plate position? Fort Worth vs. DC? Some permutation of the above?

(I know, of course, to look for web notes, very old bills, errors and interesting serials).

I have been wondering about this same question.

Last week I started a post asking something similar.
Asking how others were putting their sets together.
I did get a few responses, that gave me some ideas.

I have a Dansco currency album, and I just ordered another one today. They have nine pages (3 bills per page)

I am going to use one album for just one dollar bills, because that is what I have most of.
Example: I will put
1928 red seal
1928 Silver Cert.
1935 Silver Cert
1935 Hawaiian
1935 North Africa
1957 Silver Cert
Plus star notes .. radar notes ...
and so on .. up to current dates

The second album I plan to put groups of the same type bills
$5.00 Silver Cert
$10.00 Silver Cert
$20.00 Silver Cert

$5.00 Hawaiian
$10.00 Hawaiian
$20.00 Hawaiian

$5.00 North Africa
$10.00 North Africa
$20.00 North Africa

and so on

This will work for me, because at this time I do not plan
on collecting higher than $20.00 denomination

Not sure if this was exactly what you were asking ..

I am curious what others will post.

Check out the post below.
How do you collect U.S. paper money ?.

A lot of good Info in the above post.

It's about the same as your:
What constitutes a "set" of notes.

Them of course collect the way you want to, not the way the store bought albums want you to.

Well, I've got my fingers in too many coin pots, so I'm going to be limited to small denomination notes I can find at face at banks. I guess I'll start asking for twos and see what I find.
Rest in Peace

Easy. A complete set includes all the serial numbers.

I was just giving a example on how I plan on setting up my albums.

I posted, how I think I would like the format of my album to be, with out looking
up the exact bills. If I posted something that does not exist, please
correct me .. Because I am not sure what you mean by your replies ... is it humor or am I missing your meaning?

for example .. in my first album .. I posted how I plan on putting
"one" dollar bills in that album .. I have seen 1928 and 1935 bills .. can't say I have seen
one dollar bills dated 1934.

The way it was replied about $20.00 silver Cert and $20.00 north Africa
I am thinking.. you might be meaning, that there are not be any of those .. ?

To be clear .. I do not have all the bills in my previous post I was just posting a example of how my format might be.. collecting currency is secondary to my coin collection. I have maybe 25 different notes.
I should have explained my previous post better ..

Like CaptainFwiffo .. I have been trying to figure out a good way to organize and display them.

and this statement ..

not really sure how that is helpful.

A set is anything you want to make of it, but going by series and then by Federal Reserve branch, is a great way to collect them. That is what I do. Any star notes are optional, but it does make the set look nicer and more complete.
