"Larry Page and Eric Schmidt and filmmaker James Cameron are among those bankrolling a venture to survey and eventually extract precious metals and rare minerals from asteroids that orbit near Earth, the company said on Tuesday." If Cameron has interest in this, it may just come to pass as he gets things done, lol. One of three people ever to have lived on Earth, that have explored the depths he has. I did not think there was any chance I would see anything like this in my lifetime, but never say never when the right funding takes an interest on this planet.... Kennedy was real persistent to get to the moon, something you would like to see a modern day leader step up to the plate in such a way, at least I regards to space exploration an plans like this.... I know many may say way more cost to extract it an bring it home then a material value yielded to exceed that amount, an I say SO WHAT. Sometimes to be the first to do something is way bigger then any price tag. No telling what it may lead to.... I figure many of you might just push up the first ever 24k 1 oz. Buffalo made of pure Eros gold on ebay a wee bit past gold spot value, lol.....

On the way to pay my landlord who lives a bit more out in the country then myself, I always pass this farm who has this huge perfectly rounded pit like hole, which has a full stock of dairy cows at its bottom. From the road where I pass, It is a good difference of 50 feet or more perhaps of elevation down to the bottom....
Just around the next corner there is a similar round like impression formation which is about half as deep. I call them both big an little crater valley, every time I drive by. My girlfriend just laughs an points out how nuts I am, then I go on to say I wish I could take a metal detector down there an some ground sonar an prove my theory. The theory that indeed these two locations are ancient impact sites, lol.....

30 meter asteroid can hold $25 billion-$50 billion worth of platinum! :O

Mining is all about extracting metal cheaply enough to make it profitable. How high would platinum have to get per ounce to make mining asteroids feasible? Even so, it would still be cheaper to do on Earth.

You never know when some quantum leap in technology can change things, like aluminum going from more expensive than gold to super cheap.

Quote: You never know when some quantum leap in technology can change things, like aluminum going from more expensive than gold to super cheap. That's a fact, Fredd. We never do know when something like this will come along and make BIG changes in what we formerly thought was true. There was a time when only kings and princes could afford to eat off of aluminum plates. The lesser royalty ate off of mere gold. lol

One of my writer friends was grumbling about this story. Seems that he had started an SF tale about mining space rocks before this was published. Oh, well, too late ...

Quote: You never know when some quantum leap in technology can change things It has to be invented before anyone can invest, let alone put it in use . Try growing your food/generating oxygen in space first, then move to really complicated (ie dangerous) processes like mining/refining/manufacturing.

One of their statements was something along the lines of...the rare PM's on earth are in infinite supplies in space. Rarity is what makes PM's expensive. Won't mining millions of pounds of platinum from an asteroid dillute the market on Earth? Will the mint make "2045 ASE Asteroid Reverse Eagles"? Wait...now I actually want an ASE Asteroid Reverse Eagle.
