Copy of a coin I found on the Las Cruces trail in Panama. I sold the coin but made this copy when I was working for a friend that owns REPROSA in Panama. 1808 1/4 real Dia. 11mm, weight 0.3 grams, Nueva Reina (Cartagena?) My smallest coin.

Mathieu.

Found it with a metal detector in the old town of Limaretta which was located close to Panama City (about 5 miles out on the trail). The town is gone now and a few relics remain. Also found some American coins from the 1840-1850 era which must have been lost by gold seekers going to California. I sold it for only $250 ago!

Hey Mike, That is a stunning coin! Nice find! I live in Panama City but never heard of the old town of Limaretta. Was it located close to the Madden Road entrance of the Camoni de Cruces (by the old cannon)?

Perdidogringo.

It has been many years since I worked the trail and I will try to reconstruct the route in my mind when I have time. There was a book in the Canal Zone Library on base by a Capt.R G Ronnie called Coins of Panama. ( I have a note also by a Capt. J. Grigore?). I have a tracing of the map in his book that I made if you would like a copy.It is hard to read but perhaps would help. I would try the library if it still there and see if you can find the original.

Hi Mike,

I would love to get a tracing of your map! Could you send it to my email which is *** Private information removed by Staff. Please do not post your address/email/phone number etc. *** . I've hiked the trail many times and often wondered if anyone has ever found anything on camino de cruces. I also love to explore the camino real which used to run from old panama all the way to Nombre de Dios and later to Portobello.

I'd very much appreciate a copy of the tracings as well. I have not even heard of Limaretta. But I've seen maps of the area that change names over time.
