At first I thought this happened from sand blasting or tumbling of a sort. Then I thought blow torch melted it.
Now I can't tell. It looks like some kind of doubling on Lincoln's forehead to nose. The reverse is more pronounced than the front. Is this PMD?

Yes, the doubling effect is from the damage.

Looking at in my loupe it seems the metal is sort of smooshed sideways but the direction of the smooshing on the front is opposite of the reverse. Sand blasting would remove letters and make it smoother. The part on the forehead and nose are like the metal was scraped sideways from east to west and it juts upward. But there aren't any polished edges. Abraision shows on the outside of the rim but are pretty light, maybe just from circulation.
I wonder if this is real bad Die Deterioration with some kind of vibration going on while stamping.

Looks like CT. (Coin torture) Damage is never collectable no matter how it is done.

Ive seen some like this , and some I've been told are either "sand blasted with a Less abrasive media" and other as BigFredd mentioned a dip in acid ..

But , its a good learning piece .. Always good to ask the questions and make a post so you can gain a bit of info about anything you come acrossed ..

Good luck on your searching >!

Look forward to seeing what else you may come acrossed .!!

Again to CCF ..
