As a civil war buff I have always toyed with the idea of collecting coins from the period.

I feel like the answer will be no, but does anyone know if it is possible to get any old confederate coins?

I know most were destroyed but not sure if some have surfaced that survived somehow or if it is even legal to own these types of coins

Get yourself an 1861-O Seated Liberty half dollar and you will most likely have an affordable coin that was not minted by the US Government. The vast majority of them were struck under the authority of the State of Louisiana after secession and then the Confederate States of America.

Are restrikes modern remakes of the coin?

Yes...they were made in 1961 from the original dies. There is also a Smithsonian 150th anniversary restrike minted in 2011 from original dies.

Very interesting. I have seen restricks mentioned before but was never sure of what they actually were. Thanks for the info.

I do like the the same dies are used for them. I will have to be on the look out for those too

I believe that a few patterns of a silver Confederate half Dollar were struck, and are similar the the standard Seated half dollar of the Union.

When I was a kid, I remember viewing a picture in an encyclopedia of a half dollar with a legend: 'Confederate States of America'.

Other coins to collect from that period are the Civil War tokens. They were minted by the North, but still interesting to collect and most aren't that expensive either.

I just went to the old US mint in New Orleans. Fascinating place; they even had a Confederate half on display.

Id love to get some coins from both sides eventually. I really like the idea of the confederate coins since they were all destroyed and ideally my historical collection if you will would one day include old colonial pieces as well.

Anyway thanks every one for all the help youve definitely given me some good starting points and things to look for

Confederate notes are another thing to collect. Just be aware of the many counterfeits and reproductions out there. If you aren't sure, just post the link to the item and we can help determine it.

Never heard of this one. And I would bet if they did make it they used the Bashlow dies and not the originals.
