I just recently found it's twin brother. Mine popped right out when I looked at it. I put it aside as an example.

no notches, flattened shelf, no extra width to the devices, MD but I would keep it.

What everyone is saying is: It is not a doubled die. What you have on your coin is Machine Doubling caused by die movement during the strike.

Unfortunately it's MD. Very prevalent on 1972's, all of the MD's just add to the confusion of all of the actual DDO's that year. I see 1972 MD's way more frequently than I would like.

How about we all just agreed that MD is as collectible as DD and we can all be happy all the time :)

You can agree to that all you want, but the market at large will not agree. The market at large says Machine Doubling has no value because it is exceedingly common. Tell me really - just how many 1972 cents did you have to go through to get that one? 5? 10? In circulation it can take 2,000 or more 1972 Philadelphia mint cents to find ONE minor true hub doubled die. They are NOT common, which is why they are valuable. I have probably seen a MINIMUM of 20,000 1972 cents in my time and have yet to fine one single example of 1972P-1DO-001.

Quote: How about we all just agreed that MD is as collectible as DD and we can all be happy all the time You can collect anything you want as long as you enjoy it...just don't sell it as a doubled die.I have a few extreme examples of MD myself..the 69-S being my favorite.

I like keeping the different forms of doubling but label my 2x2s accordingly.
