Hi, while I have been noodling and learning more about collectable coins (and subsequently refining and re-labelling my finds) I am more and more wanting to define and understand the correct terminology.
Again, I haven't read all of the older posts, so if this has already been thrashed to death in an earlier discussion on this forum, please do not hesitate to refer me to that topic thread.
My (learner plate) thoughts on this are:
'Errors' are when the mint intend a result, but use the wrong equipment or process.
'Faults' occur when the appropriate equipment and processes are utilised, but fail.
This definition would mean that
Cuds and multi-strikes etc are technically not 'errors', but 'faults'. Whereas, a 1966 wavy 20 cents or 2000 one buck mule would technically be deemed an 'error' because the mint equipment or process did not fail or break, but the wrong equipment (ie an incorrect die) was initially used.
All thoughts are welcome.
