I am going to a trip at the end of the month (May). For my trip I have been picking up some Canadian money to have for spending, until we get to a bank to exchange our U.S. currency.
From reading more post I am not sure if I should be spending all that I have put together. So far I have only $20 in Bills, one's and two's and maybe $40 in coins. But I have a few more coin shops to check and see what they have and some local banks.
The one cent coins go back to the 1920's, couple of the one dollar bills are I think 1954 and some in the 1970's. I will not be spending any silver coins, pre 1968, or any that I have been putting away for my collection.
Of course it might be fun to spend some older money, maybe even spend a couple large cents .. if they would take them. But I would hate to spend something that is very collectable. I just recently thought about Canada not making one and two dollar bills and now stopping the cent. So should I not spend them?
My trip will take me from Alaska to Michigan. I think the towns/cities I will stop at will be. Watson lake, Fort Nelson, Grand Prairie and Saskatoon. I hope I can get the chance to visit a Canadian coin shop, if they have any along the way.

I gave my kids some paper one dollar notes to spend. Small problem: The One Dollar notes had been replaced in circulation by One dollar coins, way back in 1984!
The One dollar notes are still legal tender.
They were happily accepted by the older checkout chicks who could still remember them in normal circulation. They were replaced in the till by those employees with a normal circulating One dollar coin, from their own pocket!
Fun for everyone!

If ya wanna have some real fun in Canada, try buying a coffee at Tim Horton's using a few 50 cent pieces! It shuts the whole place down, the clerk may even dial 911? Glenn

I've spend a 50 cents and a 68 dollar in Montreal subway and the clerk really appreciated it. A few years ago I've tried to spend 2 50 cents coin in a MacDonald and the young girl who was serving didn't want to take at all, I argued that it was legal tender and she had to take it(that was before I learned that the merchants were in fact allowed to refuse it). Even the manager came and they obviously never saw a 50 cents in their life. Finally a lady behind me asked me to buy them and was very happy about it.

This could add to the trip .. seeing how some might deal getting some old coin and currency.

Don't use your money to buy coffee at Timmy's. Beside being about the worst coffee in the word I maintain it kills brain cells.

Saskatoon is my hometown - lots of great coffee shops. If you like donuts, the Nutana bakery on Broadway has some of the best in the world IMHO. As for your currency, others have already made great suggestions!

I routinely leave 50 cent and nickel dollars as tips. Also love to spend old ones and twos in lower grade.Never have a problem and boy do the waitresses remember the next time you come back!!

I'm the manager of our engineering office, so I kinda get to call some of the shots ... anyway, on Friday afternoons we all gather around the common-room table and play a few hands of poker (harmless fun and a good way to keep the office morale up a bit) ... it is only $2 to enter the game, so pretty well everybody in the office joins-in for a few laughs and a chance to win approx $40 in the kitty ... => I always try to toss-in a couple of old $1 bills, or maybe a $2 bill as my ante (it's funny how everybody thinks that the old bills are worth a fortune ... whateva ... it certainly seems to make the game more interesting!!) => EVERYBODY LIKES OLD MONEY!! (it is a cool flash-back)

Imagineng to spend a Silver Maple Leaf, or old large cents. It would be super funny to spend some of those $20 silver coins from the last two years!
