One of my dump banks is giving me a super hard time, and I'm conflicted on whether or not I want to make a stink about it.

I've had an account with them for a long time, I only dump 1 to 2 boxes per week, and always just deposit it into my account. I thought I was being pretty reasonable.

Today the branch manager sits me down and says we need to work out a way in which I can continue to deposit coins if I wanted to continue doing so, such as opening a business account. I told him I thought I was free to deposit money in however form I wanted into my account, and he went on to give me a speech about how it costs them money and that the frequency of it was "more than normal use" so a business account was in order.

I told him that wasn't going to happen and asked him to give me the number of his regional manager.

Thoughts on whether or not I should make a stink about it? I only dump 1 maybe 2 boxes per week, so I feel like it's well within my "reasonable" right to fight this -- but at the same time, one of my pickup banks is another branch of the same institution, so I don't want to ruin a good thing there.

If you are depositing into your account I cant see why they would have a problem. Sure its annoying for them but bad luck! Bugger them...start taking back twice as much coin to inundate them

I can't see how making a stink about it is going to help. I think it's time to find a new dump bank.

Dump at the same bank, but go to a different branch if there is one nearby. Out of curiosity - what coin denomination are you dumping?

I'd recommend staggering your dumps. E.g., today go to your branch, on Thursday go to Branch #2, on Sunday go to Branch #3, on Wednesday go back to this branch. That way each individual one isn't getting inundated with hard-to-get-rid-of coins (I love halves too, but lots of people don't), and they get a "breather" without you having to make a stink, as you put it. Everybody wins.

That's pretty much exactly how I was doing it.

They would get 1 box on Monday (and sometimes that was it) and the occasional box on Thursday.

So, yeah, I thought I was being pretty reasonable with the dumps -- but perhaps not.

I think the bank has every right to do that. I've seen it so bad in some areas where they CHARGE you just to pick up a box, but not dump. This covers their fees. If he'd agree to one box a week, I would be happy with that if I were you. So you can raise stink, but if they put in a policy where they start charging you in some way... I'd be careful.

I used to be able to order as many boxes of coin, for free, as I wanted from my bank. I never dumped at the branch I ordered from.

Then the tellers mention this other guy who is ordering, and then dumping back at the same branch, 10 to 30 boxes at a time.

They no longer order coin, even for a fee, unless you have a business account.

That dude wasn't being reasonable, but it sounds like you are. It probably has more to do with the fact that many folks are searching for silver and doing what you are doing, so even though you are all being individually reasonable, the aggregate affect is a larger than usual financial cost to the bank due to the handling of so much coin.

I think you should be diplomatic and not " make a stink".
Banks are not there primarily to supply you with coins to look through (noodle) they are there to take deposits and withdrawals on a reasonable basis.
$1000 worth of halves every week is an unreasonable request if you are only dumping them after sorting.
Pay the extra for the business account then you can "Whinge".
I get a little leery about roll searchers/noodler's that complain about banks, Most of you guys only do it to profit and has little to do with collecting so why not pay for the privilege of going through the banks coins and wasting their time.
After all the banks have to pay their staff to service your coin purchases/dumps.

I agree. Roll hunters are a pain, and heaven help the bank that may have to service one. Two of my banks took the Tarp bailout (taxpayer funded). They still collect hefty fees either way. Greedy, oh so greedy.

Unfamiliar could you clarify: do you order the coins and then dump them at the same bank or do you order them elsewhere and then dump them there? If the latter is it the case that you pick them up from the same banking company or a different one?

Let me make this clear first: If you order then dump at the same bank then I can understand their frustration.

BUT if youre getting them elsewhere and depositing there I dont see what the fuss is. You said you arent even swapping it for cash its going into your account. I would be causing a huge stink if it were me!

How big is your acccount? I think they are telling you that your "dumping" is more trouble than your account is worth. As a private enterprise they certainly have the right to do this.

Good post. Some are doing it for collecting purposes, but someone searching through $1000 worth of halves every week is likely looking for silver at face value and to flip them for a profit. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't see anything wrong with a bank putting the clamps on someone they see doing it excessively in their opinion. I roll searched for awhile and always spread out the dumps between two different banks and among 3-4 branches for each bank. I kept track on a spreadsheet to make sure I didn't dump at the same bank more than once a month. Yeah it was a pain but they were letting me order boxes without question or fees, so I didn't want to bite the hand that fed me so to speak.

I fully agree with monks. As for some of the other comments about people just looking for silver... I'm one of those people. I enjoy those hunts and I'm just tickled pink when I find a silver. I stack and in essence, not COLLECTING coins, and I will turn my silver coins into pure bullion. I think those comments were uncalled for....especially in a roll searching thread. It doesn't matter why we search, we all have different reasons, objectives and we all enjoy it. This thread is because someone is looking for advice. If you want to slander someone for their hobby....start new thread where people might actually want to hear your thoughts on another topic. As for the original post.... I don't think you should make a fuss over it. Just ask them what they are ok with. Each bank is different. I have banks that don't care if I pick up or dump. Some want me to call and some want me to bring them back when I'm done. I do though have 4 pick up banks and 4 dump banks. 2 of those banks are both. They don't mind as much as long as their supply doesn't fluctuate too much. You have to be very organized and sometimes have to take a break for a few weeks but the important thing is you get to search and more important is the bank and tellers are happy. Keep us posted. Cheers!
