I noticed people here are interested in finding ways to search boxes of half dollars faster. I thought it would be a good idea to post your techniques if you can search a box in less than 30minutes.
I find that simply opening one side of the roll pushing the coins out, edge searching, and returning the coins back to the roll can be done in less than 30 minutes.
How do other people do it?

If your just looking for silver on the half's and the wrappers are the regular open ended ones and not the shotgun type crimped then I use a pen or pencil tip to lift the end flap and open it then let them slide out into my hand as one tube. Quick ck. and count on the edges then back into the wrapper. I used to put them back in ten at a time but with a little practice you can slide all twenty in on one shot. If you skip the count on the half's you can move along pretty quickly in your searching. Have some fun and let another time you on your speed. Shoot for less than 10 seconds per roll. Try it. Maybe a thread for a speed contest ? The shotgun type are a pain. You have two choices on those. Either bust them open then you have to use another wrapper to roll back up. Or unravel one end with the tip of a pen. They are usually tight and do not always slide right out when opened on one end so a little whack or two on the table will help to loosen them up some.

Hi Indian1,
I disagree with you. I only search shotgun rolls, but I use your technique. Open one end, slide the roll out look and feed them all back in, in one push.
If you are careful they will feed right back in. I think it depends on the tool you use to open the end. Only break them open if you can return using bank bags.

Hi 52Raymo,
That's interesting. I've dabbled with bagging, but I don't like having to wait for the money to be credited into my account. Some locations actually take about 2 weeks to show up in my accounts. Bagged coin can be easier to return depending on the denomination.

Fastest way: tear open roll, dump loose into bag, turn over to teller and get immediate cash. Did it that way for 2 years straight. Almost all my banks and CU's will only accept rolled coin now...and then the tellers later unwrap and bag loose to ship out.

I don't have to wait, the teller runs them through a coin counter that is back behind the counter windows.

Don't trust a teller back behind anything with your money. And, you're still waiting lol. It's not impossible to find a bank that will take your bag of loose coin and give you immediate cash. The bags will be counted later.

Hi Fistfulladirt,
I have 2 banks that will accept rolled and bagged coins, both pay me up front for my coins. I don't usually give them bags, just because it's more work on my end. I will agree that most places that accept bagged coin do require a wait period before crediting your account.
