Hi, I'm considering buying this coin. What grade do you think it is? Does it look artificially toned?
Thanks,
peter

Toning looks natural to me.
I'd say AU58 as there does appear to be slight wear on high points.
A beautiful coin!

Very hard to tell. The coin could have original mint frost on the central devices with natural "target toning" around the rims, possibly the result of long storage in an album. It could have been dipped white long ago and gradually re-toned to produce the current appearance. There might even be some light corrosion or other problems that have been masked by application of artificial toning. The reverse denticles look weak from about 10:00 to 2:00 and that is sometimes an indication of corrosion.

For what it's worth, the toning doesn't look artificial to me.

Gradewise the coin looks AU at least. As such there should be some original luster around the stars and legends and between the bars of the shield. If no luster is present (none is visible in the photos) then I would suspect the surfaces are not original.

Toning looks OK to me. Perhaps this coin has been in a 2 x 2, and the 2 x 2 has been in a less than ideal environment.
The toning appears to be progressing in from the circumference.

Toning looks normal to me and an AU58 or better depending on original lustre. nlp

All I have to say is that that is one BEAUTIFUL coin, and I would love to have it in my type set. I agree, may have retoned over an old dip, but I personally dont mind much if significant luster is present.

The toning doesn't appear artificial to me. It appears to be a beautiful coin and should have luster under the toning. As long as the luster is there, it should grade at least a choice AU.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. They are greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure, after thinking it over for a couple of days, that I'm going to buy the coin. I'm not really a bust dime collector but I like the looks of the coin so much that I want it anyways.
