When the dip happened this week, I scraped together enough frn to buy 7 - 1 oz. Engelhard bars for the price of $29 each. Cash was tight due to my daughter graduating University of North Dakota - magna cum laude. Sorry had to throw that in, a proud father here. Now I normally do most of my purchasing a little bit each week, looking for buys that will yield as much premium as possible. But I am starting to rethink this strategy. I am thinking of stashing away the cash for the next dip. Instead of impulse buys, put the money away for a big kill. How do people on this site purchase their metal? Just wondering.

I buy during the week. Dealers seam to add an extra $1 over spot starting Friday afternoon. I buy a little every week and when I have some extra cash coming my way I try to time big purchase with dips.

Congrats on the daughter's graduation, an nice score on 7 high end bars at 29 per oz....

Hard to say whether to save cash or keep stackin silver. Silver is more of a gamble, but that is my plans as the dips in the 20's now don't scare me. Even if it turns back south Monday, as I think there is a good chance that may still happen yet....

Congrats, RastaTodd, and well done! That is no small feat. Glad to hear that she did so well and that the money you put into that venture was not wasted! I put two kids through college and it was a strain on the old finances, I can tell you. Worth every penny, though. Have plans for helping our two grand kids as well.

Good job on the 1-oz. bars as well. Adding to your hoard when prices are down is a good strategy. I did not buy any during this dip but will do so on the next one. I'm thinking that by mid-June there should be a good dip to buy into. I'm looking for $1500 gold and $25 silver at that time. Have no idea if it will happen but the powder is dry and the trigger finger itchy.

My PM buying has been a blend of buying the dips and dollar cost averaging into a solid position. I don't buy all of the dips but do try to buy when they come along. I usually get some silver on 3 out of 4 of these dips, though. At other times, I just buy when I feel like it and not because there is any strong reason to do so other than I like converting fiat into REAL money from time to time.

My strategy goes something like this:
Me: "Oh! Silver is down! Let me buy some!"
Girlfriend: "No."
Me: *Grumble* "Fine, but I'm buying another box of pennies..."

LOL

I bought some on the first 2-3 days when it drop, but not at the lower end, now that PM have creep back up somewhat I am basically even out. I got an email from APMEX that my Panda had ship out today, can't wait to check them out.

deja vu to what Ed_B said: Putting 2 kids through college is tough, for me 1 down 1 to go, and the second only have one more semester to go.
Congrats anyway rastatodd, we all made the right move in our kids futures investment, wish it weren't that tough. Is like going for a third mortgage!

I usually buy once a month. I bought on this dip which was nice. But I never wait for the dips to come, hopefully it will go lower, but right now its heading north. Silver should be $30 by the end of the weekend.

Outstanding, rastatodd! Congratulations to you both!

Everyone has their strategy, but I think you're already on the right track. Smaller but more frequent purchases let me DCA. My crystal ball is perpetually broken so the idea of the "one big buy" is out of the question for me. It's the sort of thing that, if I bet wrong, could turn me off on PM buying and take the joy out of my investing/collecting.

Of course, a big buy is relative. Saving up to get your gold collection going? That's another matter and might be worth the expenditure when the time's right. I just have to accept the fact that my timing is going to be awful and the price will drop the next day!

My daughter received her thirst for learning from her mother, while my daughter's thriftiness came from me. So I was thinking maybe to keep the stack growing I would purchase a ASE per month while stacking the cash for the dip. I look at it as a silver eagle savings account. Secondly, my 16 year old daughter just got her first job. As well as her first paycheck. I told her to invest in a small amount of silver. I hope that my advice to her will take. I wish I was at that age again. And some one would have open my eyes to precious metals.

I've bought most of my silver on ebay and pay via PayPal.

There is a new local coin shop I would like to visit but they keep the typical 9-5, Monday - Friday hours. I still don't see how small retailer expect to stay in business when they are only open when most people are working. Time will tell I guess.

So you want to save money up, while waiting on silver do dip to buy in large, if I am not mistaken?

What is your magic buy in number, while stacking one ASE a month along the way?

An your question of the thread, how do I stack....not really sure I could put a defined definition on that, I just take whims an sell often tryin to add a little to the overall stack....

I had just sold out back to square one in like January, even though I did have 10 oz. on the way in at the time, so down to 10 oz. at one point, an now I have got that number back up to 62 real solid oz. of nice silver bars, some old some new by mid May....

I would like to find a way into club 100 oz. of silver by late summer, with no CC debt, will see....

I see my next buy in number at about $24 - $25 range.
This most recent dip, I believe it got to a price of $26.90. But don't quote me on that.

I very much agree. Sharing our values, experiences, and hard earned wisdom is one of the most important gifts we can give our children. This is especially true with money, which I think is one of the most neglected subjects when it comes to child rearing. Instilling the importance of savings, the rewards of investing, and the concept of delayed gratification in your children can vastly improve their chances of living a more comfortable life in adulthood.

I too like ASE's. The biggest downside to small PM purchases is that premiums, fees, and taxes can take a disproportionately large bite out of your wallet. I'm guessing you've got a local coin dealer who has good pricing and no additional sales tax?

I'm not saying it's right, but I don't have a firm "I'll buy in at X price." Rather, I look for opportunities across a number of silver products. For example, I prefer to stack ASE's. However, if I find a deal on a silver Panda from a reliable dealer, I'll buy that over the ASE because of it's trade potential down the road. I guess the idea is to seek the best value for a given point in the market. It's one strategy. There are many others.

I found some 40% halves a while back, and sold them on ebay. I saved the money for 90%/999 bullion. I waited as long as I could, until silver started going back up. I found some dimes on ebay I couldn't pass up. I also got some more bullion from Silvertowne. It's hard to beat free shipping and no tax.
