Since you do not mind whether it is US or foreign, I moved your thread to the Main Coin Forum to cast a wider net.

Una and the Lion reverse on the 1839 British Five pounds, by William Wyon.
St George and Dragon reverse on British sovereigns, by Benedetto Pistrucci.
To quote from the Coincraft catalogue on British coins: "The first Five Pound piece issued in the reign of Victoria is one of the most famous and attractive of all British coins. It has acquired a cult status in numismatics, similar to the Gothic crown. This coin would probably take pride of place in a collection, whatever it's condition"

As above the Indian Head quarter eagle/half eagle/eagle and the St Gaudens Double Eagle are all great coins. In terms of foreign coins the British Sovereigns (both the St George and Shield designs) are really good looking. I am also a fan of the 1910's Canadian $5 and $10.

I have not in the past, am not currently and very unlikely in the future to be in a position to buy any gold coin...
As you are from the US then the easiest option is an American gold. However, having just seen turtleoverhead's posting that (or anything similar) would be the one for me. A beautiful coin and (with no disrespect to the US) so much more history.

If you are looking to buy your first gold coin because of it's artistry, and to pay a reasonable cost, a gold coin of the Neo Classical period of American coin design or a British Sovereign has to be the way to go. A sovereign can be had for bullion value that is not much above the spot gold value. I have a few sovereigns (of scarcer dates and designs), and a St Gaudens Double Eagle. Some of the Perth Mint bullion coin designs in Pt and Au are reasonably attractive.
