It looks like some one took a drill with a wire brush and spun it on the coin.

I can see a little gray color from the zinc showing.

My take on these is that they are damaged - I don't spend time wondering how. It could be one of any number of causes, the important thing is the end result. No matter how it was damaged, it's damaged.

Mr.Daughtrey;Your are correct,this coin was put away at least 12 years ago.I was going through my "old" stuff and the title "spirograph" came to mind,it was the only reason I posted it.
