Hey everyone,

I bought this dime the other day and was wondering what CCF would grade this coin in regards of details and net (because of scratch of obverse). The pictures are from the person I bought it from, I can upload more in a couple days if needed. Thank you for your time!

The line under LIBERTY is still clear and bold, but it is hard to tell from the pics. At least AU details and probably MS. What the scratch does I'm not sure. I'll hazard a guess and say it nets at XF45-AU55.

The dimes from San Francisco were well struck, so as to the details I would call it an AU 50.
The "scratch" is most likely a counting machine mark which is a shame.*
I do not use net grades, only net prices: I grade it "AU 50 with counting machine mark."
Worth about XF 40 money.

An additional observation: many SF coins were sent to the Philippines after the Spanish American War.
They surface from time to time in high grades but cleaned. The presence of the mark leads me to believe that this coin never went to the Pacific but rather circulated here.
---
*counting machine mark
A dense patch of lines caused by the rubber wheel of a counting machine where the wheel was set with insufficient spacing for the selected coin. Many coins have been subjected to counting machines - among these are Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, Walking Liberty half dollars, Morgan and Peace dollars, and Saint-Gaudens double eagles.

Its always nice to hear from a specialist! Thanks Matthew. I have bought coins that were known for weak strikes at AU prices. Knowledge can really save you!

will take you to the analysis of the 1898-S dime. I have the book and refer to it constantly.
The 98, 99 and 90 from San Francisco are tough, but the New Orleans' coins are tougher. Takes a long time to find nice examples. The "Big Easy" was too busy with year-long partying to strike a decent coin!

I hope that rycolemet is happy with his/her purchase.

I am quite happy with this coin. I really like that the details are intact (other than maybe some minor wear). I never knew that the San Fransisco coins were well struck compared to the other mints or that a counting machine might have caused the scratch!
