So on a whim I bought a lot of Spanish coins that were said to be all from the early modern period and earlier. I was hoping for some bronze maravedis and some bronze and copper coins from the medieval Islamic kingdoms of Iberia, and it seems that I have mainly received that. However, one near the bottom of this image is too light and circular to be from this period. A quick soak and scrubbing revealed it to be an aluminum 5 centavos coin from 1945. Oh well, I just have my fingers crossed for the others.

Does anyone else have any interest or information about bronze Iberian coins from the medieval and early modern period?

Also, does anyone know of a decent site that can help me ID some of these? Most cob maravedis from the 17th century are not listed in the Krause 17th century book.

Amazingly enough... maravedis.net/maravedis.org! Same guy in Spain, essentially the same info... one is the more up-to-date version of the other (I forget which is which off the top of my head). Lots of good info (pics, etc.), not only on the coppers but also silver reales and gold escudos as well. Written in Spanish, but it's easy enough to follow along.

Maravedis.net used to be excellent, untill recently where they removed many links to promote their book ...
Hopefully, I did a backup of the site sometime ago in order to watch it offline ...
I wish they will put everything back up soon ;(

Also check out this page and site (I think I see a familiar castle that might have a lion on its opposite side):http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/david...6&curPage=27

BTW: Nice coins! I would use distilled water to soak. Also try using miniscule little circles when doing your mechanical cleaning. You can use see the poor cleaning method (long straight IMHO unattractive cleaning marks) on my coin above. My favorite tool is a brass pick (try making this from brass wire from the hardware store) You may already know all this; just thought I would share.

Wow, didn't realize he had pulled it down (at least the info on the coppers - all the info on the reales, which he has been expanding over the past year or two, seems to still be there). Makes sense if you're trying to get people to buy a book, I suppose... Note that if you go to the "maravedis.org" version of the page (I think that one was earlier), a lot of the coppers info is still posted there. Under each denomination, look for "Para ampliación ... pulsar aquí" (for more info, click here).

Wow, thanks for all of the responses, info, and links, everyone! I really appreciate it. I'll keep you all posted about how my lot of coins turns out. So far I am seeing a lot of interesting designs, but not many dates. I hope that the dirt gives up those secrets.
