I spent most of yesterday CRH pennies. I had one roll where many - I don't remember how many, but enough to make me remember - of the pennies looked weird to me. Because most of the lines were parallel, I suspected them to be cleaned coins and tossed them in my copper hoard pile.

Researching it a little more, I am fairly confident they are "woody" pennies. I am trying to determine if it worth the effort to sort through my hoard pile and put them in 2 x 2s or just leave them and be on the lookout for them the next time I CRH.

I do not think these carry much, if any, premium. If you intend to keep them I would suggest a plastic tube, roll them when you get to 50.Just put the most interesting in 2x2's.

Thanks for the reply, DrDon. If do not carry any premium, I will just let them be and watch for woodies in the future.

I believe there are a few collectors that actually collect these, especially if they are in excellent condition, the grades can fool you into thinking they don't grade very high.

I have been dropping boxes of pennies in to acid recently and then sending them back out into circulation :)

so it is the striations on the penny that make it a woody?

The irregular streaks are caused by an incomplete mixing of the metals used in the planchets. They are known as an "improper alloy mix" and are very common on the earlier date Lincoln Cents.
