I am from Canada and I don't know a lot about US coins. I know that generally US coins are struck with coinage axis. I have an 1816 cent in probably G-4 to G-6 condition that is rotated, I believe, precisely 90 degrees off of coinage axis. Is this normal for 1816?

In Canada, this sort of thing is quite collectible (I collect them myself!). Do these carry a collectible premium in the US?

A very small premium. Many of the Matron Head series were rotated...I've seen quite a few actually.

Rotations *do* have a following, but pre-1830's US coinage is more susceptible to it than mintages produced after more advances press designs were introduced in that decade.

1816 rotated large cents are rated at an R5 on the rotated die census. not that rare. I see that they list 3 of them with a clockwise rotation of 90 to 111 degrees - so I bet yours has a clockwise rotation too. I guess mine isn't on that list, mine has a 90 degree CW rotation as well. i'd guess the dies were inadvertently fixed in that position for a # of strikes.

1816 N-2, 5 and 7 are known with rotated reverses. N-2 doesn't seem to get past 20 degrees and N-5 seems to top out at 60 degrees, but N-7 comes with a 90 to 95 degree rotation.
