All the windows were rattling here, I thought it was just a massive gust of wind until I logged onto facebook about 2 minutes later and saw 100 status updates commenting on the shaking.

I visited Meckering a couple of years ago. There is no sign of the fissure in the ground now, that the earthquake left behind in 1968.
Meckering was re built on another site nearby. The original town was completely destroyed, and there is a memorial on the original site.

If anyone's interested there is a webpage for where it was felt. I added my location, so far 4500 people have added to the map and they are continually updating it, fascinating, you can also see how intense it was in different areas. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthqua...000ajek#dyfi

Hope everyone is safe. I lived in Los Angeles for many years. You get used to them. Anything below 6, we'd hardly notice. I bet it's a big shock for a first timer though.

Certainly felt it here in Wantirna. Went for 20-30 seconds just before 9PM. We all sat looking at each other....nothing fell over or anything, but it was a fair old shake.

From what I have read, that area is still rising above sea level, or if could and most likely be related to the northwestward movement of our plate.

This is all getting a little scary, they are becoming more regular & stronger every time you hear about them. Bit of a bugger when your Mrs collects pottery & glass & you know it would only take one good Quake to destroy the whole lot.

Firstly hope everyone is ok and no damage to property etc.
Yeah Appleangle07, ain't it great that coins are rather robust.
Another point you raised regarding quakes becoming more common, I'm not so sure.
Ok. New Zealand, Japan and Indonesia etc I'm not going to add here. They are on plate boundary's and get quakes pretty much every day.
Australia though is a different matter. I can only think of four in the last 30 years.
Vic last night, Newcastle Sydney, Lucas Hights and there was one up FNQ a couple of years ago.
Can anyone remember others I've missed. Maybe Armidale on the NSW tablelands... Not sure about that one.

We had a 4.2 here in Tamworth NSW a couple of weeks ago, that's the first time I've experienced one.

The Government Seismologist remarked to me some years ago: "The only people surprised by earthquakes are the people who don't pay attention." I rarely check into FaceBook, but did so today. I noted that my cousin, the entrepreneurial one, who lives in Mornington, V., had T-shirts for sale, before midnight: "I survived the Melbourne Earthquake 2012", in all colours and sizes:
