Back in early March I requested help in locating VAM's on my Sisters late husbands Morgans... On March 12th, twohawks responded and pretty much nailed it ... I sent 23 Morgans to ANACS the first week of April and just received them today... I'm not sure if ANACS are getting stricter on their grading since the whole ebay thing (going up against PCGS & NGC) as the coins that I thought would receive at least a MS65 (compared to NGC & PCGS Morgans I've seen, came back as MS62 & 63's, and 6 of the 23 coins were detail grades as being cleaned (I knew 1 or 2 would come back cleaned, but 6?)... I guess my vision is not so good anymore... My request now is to see what these coins are worth prior to returning them to my sister, and was hoping someone here would know the price difference between a VAM and a non-vam (The Gray Sheet does not list VAM's)... Is there some type of price guide that I'm not aware of? I stopped selling on ebay back in 2006 when both me ebay & PayPal accounts were hacked into and gained access to my bank account... After that experience I will never give ebay & Paypal my credit card and bank account information... I can upload the photos of the ANACS coins if it would help, and I received the 1880cc VAM-3A in MS63 condition with the notation "SUPER CD" on the holder... I've heard of the Top 100, Hot 50 and Hitlist 40, but never seen a Super CD list... I also want to personally thank Russ (twohawks) for all his help and knowledge with VAMS... Thanks in advance...

there is VamView that is a price guide of VAM's but I am not sure how accurate it is. I have the 2011 edition of VamView but it doesn't list this coin in MS-63, the highest it lists is MS-60 and it says its value is $420.00 in MS-60. It doesn't show any PL or DMPL prices. I think what they do on the VamView is follow what the coins sell for at auction and if there isn't any being changed hands then there is nothing to list, also if there is only one that changed hands they go by that price so it could be very high or very low (which I have never seen the low before on here). The "SuperCD" list is a relatively new list and it stands for Super Clashed Dies list so I am guessing this coin has pretty impressive clashing even without looking it up

Many Thanks Bryan1315... In the next few days I'll take & post photos of the coins twohawks helped me with here on a single thread (if there's no limit on images per post)... If anything jumps out, advise and I'll pass it along to my sister so she doesn't get taken when she sells them...

Broken-Coin, The price guide used to be given to SSDC members (Society of Silver Dollar Collectors) electronically in .pdf format each year in January and July (last edition was Jan 2011). Due to the amount of time and effort required to compile the information, it is now only in printed form and costs $38.95. It's a sound investment for anyone immersed in VAMs, but pricey for those who have an occasional question on value. I do have the current guide and will try to remember to see if the 3A is listed in grades above MS60 when I get home today. P.S. - It is available at Vamsandmore website (click on the VAM reference book link).

Thanks SeatedNut... I checked a website last night and found the 2012 edition of VAM's for $38.95... I have some VAM Dollars in my collection (used to be a store inventory 12 years ago) and my primary interest is in World Errors that I'm currently posting on f/book for my granddaughters college education (she is now 7) and when completed, can post photo album links to anyone interested in viewing them... Getting back to the VAM Values, since I'm no longer purchasing numismatic items due to the economy (and the high cost of a divorce), and paying the certification fees for these coins out of pocket, I really can't see paying almost $40.00 for a price guide for about 3 dozen VAM Dollars in total... Two months ago I received a telephone call from my cousin saying that he inherited alot of coins that he wanted to sell, and knew nothing about... I said I would be more then happy to grade and value the coins for him (as these were my Grandparents coins & now I'm a grandfather and wanted to purchase what I could afford)... Long story short, the following day I telephoned CDN in California and ordered all their latest price sheets (gray, green & blue) for about $50.00 so I would be up-to-date on the dealer ask prices... After receiving the materials ordered, I telephoned him to set up a time block to go over everything, his reply was that he had changed his mind and decided to keep everything, then hung up! (not even a thank you for spending money to help him out) I was not happy with his reply and realized that even though I didn't want to spend the money, I needed the gray sheet anyway for the dealer "ask" prices on my Sister's coins... Now if someone could come up with a formula for VAM percentage value premium that one can add to a current price guide that doesn't list your (in hand) VAM, and have the percentage premium based on the Interest & Rareity Scale that be found on VanWorld...

The big boys will pay 75% of VamView price guide price for PCGS slabbed coins. They will usually offer 50% of price guide for raw coins with a caveat that they must holder. There is no formula for grades not listed in the guide. It's all driven by availability and desire (supply and demand). If no one wants it you probably are stuck. If everyone wants it you can sometimes name your price. There are some that are readily available in circulated grades, but get moon money in uncirculated (1888-O Hot Lips). If you have others that you need price info on, just send me an email and I'll look them up for you.

I checked the latest price guide and it still only shows MS60 ($550). That means there are no known sales above that grade. The condition consensus at the bottom of the VamWorld page for the 1880-CC VAM 3A lists one NGC 63.

one has to ask, At least I do...as I believe the VAM View guide is the retail guideline, persay of prices... not the true prices one can get for any particular VAM? YES/NO ? YOU CAN answer me indirectly at my ID email...

Neal, You are correct ... it's a "Guide". Getting those prices depends on the coin and the market. In most instances you will be lucky to get 75% of the listed price. Even less if the coin is not graded and attributed by PCGS. But every once in a while you will find someone trying to fill a hole in their registry set and will pay full price. The perfect storm is when two or more just "must have it". Unique specimens and/or top-pop specimens may get much more than estimated prices. A good barometer is ebay. There are a lot of attributed Morgan and Peace dollars listed these days. Do a search and put the coin on your watch list and see what the market is doing. I do this with many 1878 and 1880 Morgans. I have no intention of placing a bid, but I'm curious about collector interest in that variety.

IMO, The guide is just that a barometer of the latest sales, if any. I do believe the prices could be well beyond the guide, IF the buyer is there and willing, also could be much lower depending upon again, a buyer willing to shell out the green. I too have this coin, in the original GSA box, NGC graded MS-64, ALL original, I am of the thoughts that the original packageing is more desireable than a graded coin, being there is just so many boxes as opposed to coins being graded everyday.Remember what value is placed on a coin, depends on there being a buyer present willing to pay the Grey sheet prices or any other guides opinions.....
I would say the OP'S concerns are going to be an adventure, could be a great one, could/will be a reality call for the collectors desires...... Good Luck PS, Gene, I do NOT believe that guide is or does have any concrete impact on anything but listing actual latest sales.

Thanks for the spot light!! How many did I miss ? If I remember right there where 3 coins that the photos had me confused. Got to love the dancing fruit!! By the Way Seated Nut >>Has it pegged<< On condition sensitive rairities where few are known and seldom come to market it is more a sellers market. On the more common stuff its hit and miss, some types are hotter then others. And Next week they could change and what was cold can become hot and the Hot can get Cold....."Kind of like the 1980's Mc Donalds ..MC DLT's" Hot side hot ...cold side cold!

The most important factor for me is to always keep in mind "the sales guides that shows KNOWN sales". Also I am sure there are sales out there that people have no idea about...........There are plenty of firmly dug in coins in collectors collections that are NOT going to be seen for Only GOD knows how long, Also there are other factors like the coins Graded, but not attributed for variety!!!!!!Plenty out there.
