No way you didn't' tell? That is insane. LOL You have really added some serious weight over the last three months, congrats. My wife knows about my metal addition but has no clue of the scope and I'm gonna keep it that way. I can't imagine asking her before every purchase. The only thing she knows is the phone number of my good friend Silverhawk74 and to call him if I somehow god forbid drop dead. He gets 10% plus any expenses incurred and that is great for me. I can't stand the ought of her selling it to some jackleg for $.50 cents on the dollar as most of my collection comes from higher premium stock. Congrats on the 100 oz. I opted to go with 3 rolls of eagles, a roll of RCM Cougars, a old pour JM KILO instead of a 100 oz bar yesterday. It just seems like to me 100 oz bars are harder to sell then KILOs and other smaller silver products.

Well, I got up the courage to tell her last night (after telling her how much I loved her). I first showed her the Engelhard bar and she oohed and aahed over it. I then showed her the 30-day silver chart and explained how frustrated I was that prices had been over $28 for an entire month until right after I purchased the bar, after which prices dropped by $2 almost within the space of a few hours. And then I mentioned that I was so frustrated, in fact, that I bought a second bar right after the prices dropped.
Her response? "Good! I was just about to tell you to go ahead and buy another one at the lower price..."

That's what I was originally thinking as well until I saw the recent "Pawn Stars" episode where a guy brought in over $100K of silver. One of the things he had was a 100-ounce Englehard bar, and Rick didn't even bother testing it before offering him spot for it. My wife was watching that episode with me, and that's why she agreed to let me buy one in the first place.

Nobody ever questions Engelhards or JM bars that I have ever seen. And for the Pawn Stars episode that seemed like a crock of you know what. You know as well as I do there no collector in the world that is gonna let someone drill holes in their 1000 oz bar. They can very simply x-ray it to make sure it isn't filled with lead. I can't believe someone actually acid tested your Engel in the picture above.
BarryG, next time you feel like buying PM me and i'll put you in contact with my friend Dr. Platinum. He is a great guy and will do you right. He has a ton of old silver bars that you would love. He is an older guy with a wealth of experience.

Quote: Nobody ever questions Engelhards or JM bars that I have ever seen. Might want to be careful here. I have personally seen fake 100 ounce Engelhard bars that look just like the one that was pictured here. A local coin shop was the victim, and the bar looked and felt like the real deal. Basically 3 seperate cores were drilled out and filled with lead, and the bar was made to look like nothing happened. So it was still partial silver, just not 100 ounces (probably more like 40 ounces of silver, 60 ounces of lead roughly).

It might be possible to spot a fake bar by carefully measuring its size and weight. Silver has a density of 10.5 grams/cc, so any .999 coin or bar purchased should be very close to that. Lead is about 8% heavier than silver per unit volume. The difference in a fake bar will be less because of the blend of metals but it should be detectable.

Hey, Ed! Glad to see you're still around. We were starting to get a bit worried when you didn't post anything for a few days... In other news, I was at a flea market yesterday and picked up a nifty 7-inch square dovetailed wooden box from ca. 1900. It originally held children's blocks, but it seemed to be just the perfect size to hold my new silver bar and its future friends. And I was right: Originally, I was just going to line the bottom of my safe with the bars, but an antique wooden box (in the safe, of course) just seems so much classier to me. My second bar is due to arrive today. Hopefully, when I get the two of them together in the box and close the lid to give them a little privacy, they will turn out to be mating pair...
