i like the idea of having the cheap gold plated coins out incase of a theft.and thief would definatly take sonething that says gold before they steal silver. another idea is to put a really high false price on the flip that it is in :)

I'm with Ed. Kids talk, regardless of how well-behaved one might think they are. Remember the "My dad is better than your dad," game we all played in elementary school? It could easily turn into, "My dad is richer than your dad... and here's why..."

I think as a general rule, there should be nothing left in the open that resembles a bullion / coin collector. I just now am starting to find a well hidden spot for simple things such as value books or loupes. Accept the semi hidden thing about the thing that they shall find first. Know what I mean? I know what I mean

About 30 years ago, I had a grandiose money-making idea called "Bogus Booty." It was a boxful of valuable-looking stuff that wealthy people would BUY and make "findable" while they were out of town. A fake Rolex, a fake video camera, some fake Krugerrands, fake jewelry, etc., etc. a boxful for $129. Well, the idea never got off the ground, but it was good for laughs around the kitchen table. Always thinkin' about security and privacy. Oh, and there was a set of metal plates you bolted around a concrete block (the strongbox), and so heavy and slippery and awkward that the burglar would only make one trip. Moving the "strongbox" triggered a silent alarm ($99 extra). We were going to advertise Bogus Booty in the Robb Report. Remember them?

@doug - Just add in a "LoJack" style tracking option and I think it's still a very marketable idea!

I have always, of course placed things exactly the way I want them. Not many people have the attention to detail to place a box back at say, exactly 90 degrees from the edge. Things like that.
Thats of course assuming they were only snooping around, or taking one or two ounces.

Quote: I just now am starting to find a well hidden spot for simple things such as value books or loupes. Excellent idea! Items of that kind definitely indicate that coins or other valuables may be in the house. My Mom has some blue coin folders that hold either silver dollars or half-dollars. She put these on her bookshelf along with several other blue books that look similar. I have mixed thoughts about this. While these are camouflaged pretty well, they really are not all that secure. I mentioned to her that these should be put into their safe but since that is not bolted down and only weighs about 150 lbs., that's not a great plan either. Yes, it can be difficult to raise parents!

My wife is aware I have some valuable coins but definatly not their worth as she'd be pretty unhappy w/ me. My dad & best friend are aware where I keep it and a general value of it, I don't want to die and have it be lost or sold for no where near value, my dad and best friend are completely trustworthy not to mention it to anyone.

One strategy to use if you feel like you told one too many people is to tell them that you decided to cash in for profit or to pay off medical bills. Works like a charm every time. ;)

Of course, one could simply either say they sold their stash or just move it to a different secure location.

Or one could move the good booty to a more secure location for a while and not talk about it very much at all and eventually stop talking about it completely after telling everybody you sold it. then waiting an appropiate length of time to realine yourself with said booty.

I might have a new challenge. I am most likely going to have a new girlfriend. So if it turns out that I like her enough that we get our own place, I would try to keep my secret safe with me. Lets just wait and see.

Heh! New relationships are great...but they always change the equation. Consider forgetting the safe for now. Join a local credit union. Get their cheapest safe deposit box. Stow your PM's. No unwanted questions. No unneeded worries.
