This might be a dead horse for most of you guys. However, I'm new to the game and I spilled some info already. I told my brother, while asking if I could have a little box for stowage, which triggered a whole conversation about it. Maybe not a big deal, as I only have 30 oz so far. Worse case, there would be a snow ball. (He tells some one, Then he or she tells someone. While her tells him)... So I'm going to make a decoy stash. Maybe 10 ounces of the least faves in a relatively accessible location. Then, the rest in a very hard to find place. Whats your strategy? Need to know only?
From now on, its my little secret, and only I know the password.
-Discuss....

You're thinking smart. Don't talk about it casually, don't leave coin books lying around when guests come over. My fear is someone's punk teenage son who is bored decides to swipe stuff.
It's not that I don't trust you... I don't trust your kids who has been swiping your prescription meds.

Most of all, make sure you never talk about it in a public on-line forum...

Agreed, very smart thinking! People are going to talk, even when asked not to. I really like the "decoy stash" idea. The best security in the world, bar none, is obscurity. If no one know's you're a stacker, the probability of you or your family being targeted for theft is very very low. If you think someone knows or suspects you collect coins, I'd spread the rumor that you DO NOT keep your collection in your home or apartment. "Everything is at the bank" is my standard answer if the question ever comes up. I've said this before, but the only place I ever discuss coins is with the good folks right here on the CCF forums. I share lots of my hobbies and and interests with my family and friends. However, coins are something I keep just between me and a handful of discrete local coin dealers.

I have a decoy stash that is kind of hidden. What I have done is got some of that gold plated stuff that sells for cheap. One example is the National Bicentennial Medal with the Statue of Liberty that is gold plated bronze. It looks good because it really was put out by the mint. Has a little box and a COA. You can get them pretty cheap at the coin shop or online (as long as the people selling know they are plated, there are smaller ones that are solid gold), I paid less than $10 for mine. If you want you can get fancy and put them in the 2.5x2.5 flips and make sure to label them as being Gold. You can even get one of those cardboard boxes and put a label gold coins on it. All those gold plated Kennedy's and State Quarters? Toss them in the box, you average theif isn't going to know the difference and since most are smash and grab any way...

Agree, as I am fairly new to the silver game I have given to much info, but have said exactaly what I have to people, If you have coins, buy yourself some of those cheap mini fakes and a decent box to dress them up and look legit, store it in a fairly noticible place, as 9/10 these people that are thiefs tend to forget one thing as the shine of the coins/bullion blind them(read the "fine print") Get a good safe (not cheap, decent strengh) and dyno bolt it to your concrete slab,

Multiple locations, and make sure then tell people you trust with your life about two locations each. If you get hit by a bus today you want your loved ones to be taken care of.
Tell each person (parent, brother etc.) of 2 specific locations each. No two people should know of the same two. Everybody else should think it is in a safety deposit box.
Also never put it in something that can be moved... IE in the back of that old TV in the basement, you don't want to find that someone gave that old thing to charity, this does happen.
Also think "what if the house burned down? Silver and gold does melt so a steel box will keep it from flowing away. Ammo boxes are good for this, PVC pipes that some like to use are not.

When asked, I am quite open about the worthless coins that I collect and emphesize the lack of value in them, clearly stating that I can't afford to sink a lot of money into them. All of which is ture. I don't mention any of the other aspects of the hobby that involves any serious $$$.
Edited for spelling.

Treat your coins like they're a national security issue- need to know, only.

I don't really tell anybody about it. It's just a small stash, but nobody, friends or family really know about it other than I collect ASE's.

Right now, my wife and 7-year-old son know that I have some silver, but my son only knows about the numismatic coins and a small number of ASEs that he has seen me buy. Only my wife knows that I have been stacking silver lately.
It's not that I don't trust my son not to blab about it... Well, actually, it is because I don't trust my son not to blab about it. I'm also hoping he doesn't turn into a rebellious teenager someday...

We can only hope Barry, I bought my daughter a 1once silver with a holographic dolphin on it,she did'nt show much interest when I gave her it, but as soon as her cousin came over, she had a change of tune and was proud that it was real silver. All we can do is try teach them, and guide them through there little mistakes so that when they grow, the think before they speak.

Yeah, I even have a few steel pennies, and buffalo's, mercuries. From when I very first started, before thinking about silver. (about 20 pieces all together)I have about 30 dollars invested in that. However, unbeknownst to the possible robber that see's the decoy, he or she may think that is my main stash . It will be semi hidden as if that is what I'm nervous about..

Reno, just add the 3 bars to the coins and leave that out, start again and tell no one, if they ask, just say it was a faze and you rather now waste good paper money on blocks of something that gathers dust ;)

Just don't tell anyone where it is at. I have a fault at one of my business's that holds the stuff I like to get out and play and all new purchases. All my big things are spread out amongst 3 secure locations. Know one but me knows where the combinations and as far as my wife is concerned she is on a need to know basis.
It is my Will of what is to happen to my PM's when I die.
What's crazy is the guy in charge of selling it for them is a Forum member here that I have never actually met, but someone who I trust 100%. Crazy I know but there are some truly great people ion this site.

Barry you literally mad me laugh out loud with that comment, you and I are the worst about posting the crap we buy on here.
