I went to the coin shop today ( distance from my home, so I cannot get there as often as I would like). A couple months ago I bought a 32D from him and, after getting it home told him I was concerned about the mint mark looking like it had been added. He assured me it was not, but would be glad to return the money to me. I kept in touch with him and saw him a few shows. and he remembered me. I asked him to look for another one for me, although, b/c of him I now knew that these MM's can look the way this one does (patina around the MM and a filled D). Many on online auctions do. During this time though, I had found a fantastic deal on GreatCollections and had bought one there that I liked. After thinking about it, (sometimes my meds cloud my mind!), I thought that since I had asked him to look for another one for me, I felt kind of bad. But I went to the shop today, told him what I did, and he never batted an eye but instead congratulated me and was genuinely happy for me. He spent the next 20 minutes shooting the breeze with me and answering other questions I had concerning different areas of collecting. He was the one who kept the conversation going until I said I had to leave. If you ever are going through Hagerstown, MD, I highly recommend Antietam Coin Exchange. Obviously he has a great reputation as this is the only coin shop I have been to in a long time that, while I am in there, there are always at least one or two more people coming in/going out. He has a large selection of cases to browse. He sells used Dansco's (in good shape) for 5.00 each (when he gets them in). And he bends over backwards to be honest. He is the one who told me when I got the original 32D and S quarters off of him that he had won them on Heritage and then dipped them b/c he can then get a better price out of them. Everything is on the table with him and he takes a genuine interest in you. On ebay he is oozentoo. And, no, I get nothing for this - he does not even know I am writing it But I'd feel like I was keeping a great secret from the CCF family if I did not let you guys in on this.

Dear Earle42, You have restored my faith in a board where the majority are too quick to mean-mouth dealers. Sure, these dealers deserve to be identified. But praise should be given, as you have done, to identify those dealers who go the extra mile. Thank you for doing so.

Customer service goes a long way, too bad so many brick and mortar coin shops don't follow that rule.

I guess I'm lucky in that I've got 3 dealers that I go to that are all friendly and good to deal with.

I think that it would be a great idea if coin dealers employed guys that run fishing tackle shops to help them learn how to treat customers. I have NEVER been to a tackle shop and had a bad experience

Good story Earle, nice to know there are dealers out there that can earn that kind of trust. Pretty good feeling, isn't it!

What? A coin dealer been nice? Absurd. If only there are more dealers like this, the coin collecting hobby would be much more enjoyable. Far too many times we instead hear of a dealer swindling valuable coins of an old lady. Good to hear you have a great store by you.

It is a great thing to find a good honest dealer. I have gone through about 4 of them until I found one myself.

I'd love to have such a dealer - heck, ANY dealer near me! There's nothing but pawn shops around here.

I have a very friendly dealer nearby me. I have been going there now for the past six months or so. Every time I go in, I make it a point to stay and chat for a while. I am a young collector and found it hard to find a dealer that would give me the time of day. I found out fast that most my age (mid 20s) just want to sell their inheritance. I love my ever growing collection. Anyways, Don from Flying Eagle Coin in Bay City has been more than just a helpful coin dealer, he and his wife set coins aside that they feel I will like. I was even given a great opportunity of going through cans of coins that he had just taken in and were not even out yet. I cannot say enough about how great this coin shop is. It took me 3 different coin shops until I found the one I call home. If you are ever in the Mid Michigan area, be sure to go see Don. :)

I wish I had a had an ok dealer near me... For now I have a dealer who sells good coins but the containers contain PVC and a place with only bullion but good containers... Bit annoying having to go to two places for coins and supplies...

stud72 - when I was starting out, it was my science teacher (who quit teaching to open a coin shop!) that did the same for me. He let me work there with him and it was a blast! And for those guys who don't have a great dealer near you, like I said, look him up on ebay. I know when I am in the shop, he will pull anything off of ebay (as long as there are no bids of course) knock off the amount he had to add to the cost to help cover ebay prices, and then he has knocked more off of that! My dealer's name is Rich. He, his son, and wife are always there with him. And I know the son primarily does all the ebay stuff while Rich handles most of the store customers. And I also know if in his ebay sales he had an non-slabbed Trade dollar (or some other commonly faked coin), I would definitely be confident in bidding/buying. If any of you will be at the big Baltimore show this week, he will be there. BTW - I agree with the fishing tackle idea!

Folks that run tackle shops have had a life long love of angling. Not every coin dealer started out as a collector. Those who did are the teachers of new collectors. They are patient. And they love coins. Those who are in it for the money and who do not care about the coins themselves are, well, I avoid them. We cannot change the world. But we can and should share are experiences when we are fortunate enough to find the good dealers who are still out there.
