I will start off by saying I hardly ever go looking for coins on Craigslist and actually wasn't this time, I typed in "camaro" in the search just looking to see what was out there. Anyway when I saw Morgan silver dollars in the title I had to click on it. Here is the CL ad http://charlotte.craigslist.org/bar...5847818.html . In case its not there when some click on it here is what the ad says Quote:I have an almost complete Morgan silver dollar set to trade. I have spent a long time putting together a very high end set. This set is only missing 4 coins, 1889CC, 1893S, 1894P and 1895Proof. Most of the coins are in GEM BU condition. Some of them have been graded by PCGS, NGC or ANACS. Some of the graded ones I have taken out of the slabs and put into the Dansco Albums and some are still in the slabs. YOU MUST SEE THIS SET TO BELIEVE IT. It is absolutely beautiful. The Red Book Price guide adds up to $16000+ for all that I have. That doesn't even include the time I have put in searching and upgrading to get this set where it is at. There are 92 total Silver dollars out of a complete set of 96. If you are a coin collector this can be the centerpiece to your collection. I also have other coins to trade, as well. I am looking for a Camaro or Corvette but shoot me any offers of anything interesting. I am looking at around $20k in trade value and can add more coins/sets for something higher in value. If you want to buy this set outright, I will not go a penny less than $17,500. Thank you. I think his price may be a little high but if I had the money to spend I can't say I wouldn't go check it out because there may be some nice coins in the batch and if he doesn't know VAM's there could be a couple good ones in there also, you just never know

Yes, I think he is a bit high as well. I could check them out though seeing how I am in the Asheville area and Charlotte is not that far.

Why did he use a picture of an XF graded coin if he has so many in "GEM BU" condition?

Anyone have a bar code scanner? I'd find out the number on that slab and check to see if it has been reported stolen.

his wording makes me believe he is actually a collector so I really doubt its a stolen collection. I doubt any thief would know what dates are the rare ones of the series like he named in the description. I am also guessing the reason he took a picture of the 1895-O is in XF when some others are Gem BU is because the date and value of the coin. He said some had been cracked out to put them in Dansco albums (how many thieves knows the difference between a Dansco Album or others). He may have left the higher valued coins in the slabs and he just took a picture of this coin because of the rarity of the coin. This is completely guesses on my part as I haven't talked with this individual at all about the coins as I know I would just be wasting his time if I were to contact him as I am in no position to purchase the coins

Some call me a pessimist, I prefer to think of myself as a realist. Personally I would approach this sale with caution. I was at an auction last year. A guy from Charlotte was there with 7 complete Morgan $ sets and they were all XF or better with the 1895's being "graded by PCGS" He had a lot of other stuff as well and he did state that he had some partial sets back in Charlotte as well. I thought that something was a little fishy because these were not on the block to be auctioned, but were being sold straight out for Cash Only. Upon closer examination I found that 3 of the 1895 plain Morgans had the same serial number on them. When I pointed that out to him he politely asked me to leave the area where the coins were on display before he had me removed from the premisses. I had my wife go back to look at them and she told me that he only had 5 sets out then. This was about 14 months ago and the asking price for a complete set was only $12,000.
Now I am in no way saying that this is the same guy. I am just throwing this out there so if any of you do decide to purse this, please do so with caution.

Good idea, get the cops involved. That would have been a nice thing for the con artist.

I am not saying that these can not be fake, I am just saying I don't think it is a thief trying to get rid of coins they had stolen the night or week before because he seems to know a little about Morgans and basic information about albums where a thief that knows nothing may not even know there are different types of albums like the Dansco and not even mentioned it. I always use caution no matter what it is thats selling on craigslist and anything of this value should definitely be gone over with a fine tooth comb. I just posted it because like I said I do not search for coins on CL and saw Morgans and thought if I had the money I may have a look at them myself

I had a bizarre experience with CL, about two years ago. It starts like this: I'm looking for a motorcycle on ebay, and I find a very interesting Honda GL.1500, with double side-car and trailer, in Port Augusta, South Australia (a small town, and remotely located). The bike was in a non-standard colour scheme, and the sidecar & trailer matched (cool, eh ?). Some weeks later, I was in the area, and 'phoned to arrange inspection. That was OK, but the seller was holding it for someone else. So, off I go. Forward three months - I stumble over an advert on CL for ... a Honda GL.1500, with double side-car and trailer. I look closely: same distinctive paint job, and all the backrounds are the mountains near Port Augusta. Hhhmmmnnn ... I make contact. The seller says he's in Sydney, and is asking for a low-end price. He'll deliver anywhere in Australia, and offers a total refund if the buyer isn't satisfied. I insist on inspection, but now he's overseas, and the bike is in storage ... and he halves his asking price. I didn't take it further (bought a Laverda instead). As far as I can determine, the intended scam is that I am expected to send my money, by one of the "less secure" means; and a few weeks later, when my bike doesn't arrive, I'm left with nothing except for a defunct e-mail address to follow up. I mention this because, when searching on CL, I would now only hand over my cash at a face-to-face delivery of the goods.

In most of these situations someone wants cash. That much cash on a person is not a smart thing to do. I wonder where the meeting would take place. I wonder what the seller would say about meeting in a police station.
