Okay, so a new circulating commemorative $ coin series is out & about and another one is planned in 09 for the cent

If patterns from the Statehood Quarter & Louisiana purchase nickels are any indication, then we might see a sleeper series (or two) garner some value. As a collector, rising values always take a back seat to my collecting habits but it does feel good to see a financial increase even if I never plan to sell.

This led me to the thought of what sleeper series I've been picking up here & there and I was curious what sleeper series do you, as a collector, have your eye on? Will the new presidential $ or cents influence you to look at a sleeper series? Are the combined potential of a new $ or cent series and rising silver prices influencing you to buy a coin before predicted prices rise?

Unless something drastic happens to the Roosevelt dime, this series will continue to be a sleeper. Let me rephrase that, will continue to be dead. Another series that hasn't seen much action is the Kennedy half. The 1998 S silver matte finish is the key to the series and very affordable, even with a mintage of slightly more than 50,000. I have yet to hear of any commemoration for these series, but 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of the death of JFK, and 2021 will mark the 75th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime. There isn't much happening with either of these series, so they can both be considered sleepers.

I have a confession...I'm a closet dime hoarder. Normally I'm busy building a type set but whenever I found myself in a coin shop after a major purchase with $5 to $10 leftover I just can't resist the urge to buy a barber or pre-1921 mercury in VF. They just seem so cheap. It just seems a wrong to keep walking by and not purchase them at those prices.

I guess the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem

It could be worse, I hoard pre 1964 Roosevelt dimes.
Rest in Peace

Franklin half dollars

Proof Sacagaweas

If Congress authorizes silver proof Presidental coins, they would definitely be worth putting aside.

Proof ASE's

Australian Lunar coins due to low mintages.

This year's silver proof sets.

I can't resist Barber coins either. Where I live (Sweden), a surprising number of Barber dimes come along each month in decent quality, so I figure-- why not?

For me, it's hard to believe any modern coin series will ever be a sleeper series when they are so widely collected and stored away in such great quantities.

For sleepers I collect SBAs and Ikes. Even though these are relatively new coins, not many collect them.

I also collect Franklins, but would not consider them a sleeper as this weeks Coin World had an article (CoinValues p.50) where it indicated that 68 percent of subscribers collect Franklins. Plus, if you look at their prices, they have been moving in the last few years.

Three Cent nickels....hands down one of the most overlooked (sleeper) series. Next to Shield nickels.

Hello Everyone,

I would say that in my opinion the 40% Silver Bicentennial, Brown, and Blue Eisenhower dollars are the real sleeper coins around today. These coins are highly underestimated in my opinion ESPECIALLY the Brown Ike's still in their government holders.

That's my opinion.

The problem with the Ike's is the lack of popularity for the series. There were alot made and the series has not gained too much of a following.

Which is why they are a sleeper. I do believe that they will eventually become a more popular series. Especially for people who want to collect a complete series, and find most of the real popular series just too expensive.

I'm not too sure of that. Their mintages are high, especially the bicentennial. I would love to see Ike's become popular, but I think there is a better chance of Roosevelts gaining popularity.

Yeah that true especially the high Mintage figures. But wouldn't the fact that these are the last large size dollar coins ever made add interest?

I think the 20th anniversary gold and silver eagle set that is graded will be a sleeper. This set hasn't gotten nearly the press that the other two sets have. But at only 20,000 sets, the graded sets will be worth some money in the future. I think it's a sleeper because you could buy both coins separately so people kind of ignored them. But with the special label, I think you'll see some upside to them.

Now what is not a sleeper are the silver and gold sets. The prices keep going up. It's crazy. A NGC 70 set is going for $7,600 on ebay right now and it says the reserve is not met. And I see 70 sets of the silver eagles at over $1,000. I think the reverse proofs are what drives these prices, though. Hmmmm.... maybe the gold and silver sets won't be worth much. Who knows....

I'm not an IKE fan but I believe only certain aspects are sleepers and not the whole series. High MS Ikes IMHO are sleepers. There were just too many weak strikes in the series and anything in a high MS grade is under valued. Since we are on the subject of dollars we might as well throw in Peace dollars to round it out.

This thread has taken some interesting twists and turns. What is becoming apparent is that with so many sleeper series out there there is still a lot of room and variety for new collectors with low budgets to enter the hobby for less than $10 and enjoy it.

So here's the count based on posts to date-

20th Century Issues
Pretty much all dime series
Franklins
Sac's
Susie B's
Ikes
Peace $

19th Century Issues
3 cent nickel

Bullion
Proof ASE's
20th anniversary gold and silver eagle set

If I missed any I apologize
