Just google 1914 D diagnosics. There are several resources from ANA, PCGS, and others.

NO "VDB" on the raised portion at the bottom of the bust. If the coin has VDB here, then it is a fake/tooled/etc.

Watch out for retooled 1944-D cents...it is one of the more common ways to fake a 1914-D..and I just spotted one in the personal collection of a dealer near me.....so it does pay to study them for yourself.

Excellent point indeed! Many altered from the 44.

If you plan on purchasing a higher grade specimen, my suggestion would to do so slabbed.

BTW, I moved this topic to the more appropriate forum

Also, the mint mark has a 'triangle 'shape to it.

Get to know the right spacing between the 9 and the 1. When removing part of the 4 in a 1944, it leaves a large empty space.

Thank You All. I did by slabbed from a member here. I may crack it out to fill that hole. Next on the list are the 09s VDB & 22 no d.

The opening of the D mintmark is a narrow sideways triangle, fairly obvious on a coin with good detail but can be tough to see on a well worn or beat-up coin.
