I bought this coin for a few bucks knowing full well it had issues. I thought it had had scotch tape on it at some point but it looks like solder. It kinda looks like they were attempting to fill in the gouges on the face. Any way to get it off ? Maybe heat it up to melt the solder ? I'm going to use it as a learning tool. It has nice bones but major issues and will never be worth much at all. It will be my Frankenstein piece.... Oregon coin geek.....*** GO BEAVS ! ! ! ***

That's too bad. It is actually not a bad coin other than the PMD

EF details, cleaned. Weird on the solder issues. What people do to deface coins!! Holing them, counterstamping them, gouging them on purpose, cleaning them, and now soldering.

Yeah, besides the solder, you can tell they stripped the coin and attempted to re-tone it but the solder didn't tone. At least that's my best guess.

Ummmm, water is NOT going to remove solder. Solder is melted metal.
Yeah, heat it with a soldering iron. It might work. Sucks because it was indeed a decent coin.

I wonder if a regular old lighter would get it hot enough ? I don't have a soldering iron. I might try it tomorrow.

I couldn't get the solder off with a regular lighter. I guess it just won't get hot enough. I don't have a soldering iron so I made a bath for it of salt and vinegar. The solder started turning black and is actually starting to come off. I don't know if it's all gonna come off but we'll see.

Hmmm, I weighed it and it's 3.20 grams. Plated I guess.

It took a lot of soaking in a vinegar salt bath but even more rubbing with Crest Pro-Health, lol. The solder is almost all gone. The weight is now 3.15, pretty close to normal. It's shiny as all get out and this is where I'm at now. Darkening will be next...

A definite improvement in eye appeal and the Crest has improved her smile Some people will say you ruined it but for a few buck investment it was a good learning experience. Post updated pics after the darkening.

I'll post pics after I get it darkened. The cent was already toast so no loss. Definitely looks better than it was.

Welp, my Frankenstien coin is coming along. I did uncover a divot in the feathers. That may have been part of what they were trying to fix/hide. I think it looks better...

Carry the coin in your pocket for about six months and the shine should go away. Ed ANA LM-3175
