Wow, just goes to show that sometimes a coin must be cleaned! If there is a material covering the coin, what good is it? You turned something ugly into something beautiful!
I know cleaning is bad in general, but it had little appeal before, but now it looks great!

It was fun to play with and I only paid 3.25 for it. Sure took a lot of rubbing to get most of the solder off. I think somebody thought they could fill in scratches/gouges with solder but the solder got away from them. They tried to tone it but apparently solder doesn't tone.

lol, well solder is made from different mixtures of tin, lead, and aluminum. So, the fact that it is a copper cent means even if the solder toned it would not tone the same!

I suspect it wasn't solder but some kind of filler or adhesive like bondo that might have responded more easily to acetone.

It definitely wasn't bondo or any kind of adhesive. I'm sure it was solder as the acetone did nothing.

OK, you never mentioned that you actually tried acetone on it.

For $3.25 and a lot of elbow grease you have a nice looking cent.
It has been said for a long time, "If you are going to try to clean coins,
experiment with some inexpensive ones first."

52Raymo, yours is the exception to the rule that one should never clean a coin.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Wow, it's beautiful under all that garbage!! Ruined? Nah. I'd be happy to buy that cent even knowing its history--the details on the headdress and cheek are gorgeous.

Wow that coin looks way nicer than before! This is one of the few exceptions where cleaning a coin might have raised the value.
