Holy outstanding coin jeffrose! Amazing how this survived the years passing from one collector to another to now be available today.

Per the article, it was struck on a Trade dollar planchet sometime in the 1870's. It is not considered a restrike since none were originally minted in 1802. The best one of four known examples. I think it should hammer at 2M+.

It might only get about a million. The last time one sold was for $920k I believe, and that was 2008. There have been a couple other very high end coins like this that only did OKish recently, like that ultra-high-relief St. Gaudens.

It really is a bad time to be trying to sell things like that unless they really need the money.
This coin is amazing in just about every way though but I doubt it cracks 1m. Especially not on heritage with the buyers fee. The total bid and buyers free price will probably be over 1m but I dont think the bid itself will be

Quote: I never heard of a "novodel" before. It's an interesting read on the Heritage site. I believe "novodel" is basically the Russian term for "restrike", and literally means "newly done" (though IIRC it usually refers to relatively old restrikes). I have no idea why would Heritage use this term for an American coin (well, unless it's a Russian restrike). PS: After reading the actual article, I think what they're saying is that this specific type of restrike (whatever that is) has only this example among American coins, but is relatively common with Russian ones (which does indeed seem to be the case), so they borrowed the Russian term. Of course, the original Russian term is basically synonymous with "restrike"... PPS: Then I googled "novodel" to have a better estimate of what the word refers to in English; I didn't get any serious difference from what I said above (except that some apparently think the word means "replica") - but one site ( ebay Guides of all things) specifically mentions the 1804 King of Siam set as an example of a restrike that is not a novodel... because, quote, "it is a strict and faith reproduction of such coins in circulation". Even ignoring the fact that it's spelled "faithful", I fail to realize how nonexistent 1804 dollars can be a faithful reproduction of anything

I TRULY wish I had won the lottery recently. From what I know, THIS IS THE TIME to be investing in rare and ultra high grade coins.

Wow! What a coin!
I would guess anywhere from 1.2 to 1.5 million for that

I guess the reasoning would have to be that its struck after the date on the coin for they dont consider it a true first run. Seems like it should have its own term them. To me at least a restrike means that something had to be struck first to redo it

Interesting article. My guess $2.3M (only because it's CAC'd). OK,so... Did they really need to send it to CAC? Come on.. man. Was CAC going to return it without a sticker with a note "the other three PR65s are nicer"? I mean... really?! Does the buyer actually pay more because of the sticker? And would it really be worth paying the CAC fee? Where is that darn sarcasm fond key when you need it? LOL Ultra sweet coin! Thanks jeffrose for sharing.

This auction ended on 8-3-12. Does anyone know how much it went for?
