Not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but I have just started collecting English and world bank notes and understand the Krause Books are needed to value foreign notes correctly. I also understand there are a number of these and they are quite expensive. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which ones to buy. Many thanks. Sheen

Those were the books I used for both World coins and currency for a number of years. Prices may be off in the book and you would need to search the net for up to date prices. But the books are great for photos and catalog numbers.

The Krause Catalog of World Paper Money is a good reference book if you want to know the different banknotes that were issued for each country.
There are many mistakes in the catalog that have not been updated in years. You would have to use the catalog as a reference guide as well as put together your own list for missing banknotes and varieties.
As for the values that are given in the catalog most are completely wrong. You will find the catalog prices too high for common banknotes and too low for rarer ones.
You can search google for the PDF version of the book.
Another excellent reference is banknote.ws it is one of the most updated websites on world banknotes.
The Banknote Update from banknotenews.com is the best updated book for modern banknotes but at $99 still expensive.

The "General issues" and "Modern issues" books cover what could be called "regular" paper money, issued by recognized banks and central governments.
The "Specialized" book contains notes issued by unrecognized rebel groups, unauthorized banks and entities and other "irregular" issues produced during times of crisis, war or economic turmoil. For example, it contains Philippine insurgency notes, German Railways hyperinflationary notgeld (but not most other kinds of notgeld) and notes issued by various Chinese and Russian revolutionary groups. If these kinds of notes don't interest you and you don't think you're likely to encounter them, then you won't need this book.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Krause publish 'telephone books' on a lot more subjects than just coins. I have telephone books on car imports into the U.S. since WW2, banknotes, World coins covering the last 400 years, and Mexican coins.

So from what you have all said, if I am going for just general notes that I find at fairs etc, then I'm probably best checking out values on recent auctions, rather than spending out on the Krause books.

Sheencrofter: The Krause catalogues are an excellent photo reference good compartative price guide and a poor current price guide.
In think that is the basis on which you decide to buy them.
If I am considering to buy a particular coin or note, I will check the Krause catalogue to confirm WHAT I am considering to buy or bid on, then go to the the web to look for current prices on similar items.
For expensive items I normally like to examine the item in hand, unless the seller is well known to me.

Are these out of copyright and can be freely shared?
I'm not trying to be difficult but if they aren't, the CC site might get implicated in promoting something illegal.

The Krause books are copyrighted. If you google it on google books there is a free preview for the latest edition. Not all countries are previewed but some are. You can also buy the Banknote book. http://www.banknotenews.com It is more accurate and updated but you will have to pay $99 per year. Also check out http://www.bankote.ws This site is the most updated site with a very accurate like of the different varieties but you will not find any prices/values.

PMG just added an online lookup for world notes in conjunction with Numismater which is also run by F+W. I have not looked at iut extensively but it looks like the Pick catalogs may be coming online that way.
