I'm a pretty Die Hard Coin collector and I am really into classic gold. I want to ask some of you your opinion. I want to do some investments in gold. My question goes like this. If you had $1600 to invest would you choose just strait bullion like a 1oz gold bar or would you be more interested in some well graded classic gold quarter eagle or something?

Eithers risky. If you think gold is going to shoot up again bullion would be the way to go. Personally gold is high for my taste right now and I think well see it drop again before shooting back up but could be wrong. The classic coin wont gain value as fast if at all really (although if the economy improves prices probably would go up as people have more money to spend on extra things) but at the same time youd be more protected if gold dropped as its value isn't just because of the gold

Most pre-1933 gold coins below MS are traded as bullion coins. You might be able to pick up an EF Liberty $20 for close to bullion if you shop around. For pure bullion I'd go with AGE's, Maples, and even K-Rands instead of bars.

I would buy as high a grade Charlotte or Dahlonega gold piece I could for the $1600.00. These coins are very popular and hold their value quite well. I had a five dollar Liberty from each of those mints about twenty years ago in VF that I sold for about $500.00 each and today the lowest priced C or D mint five is at least $1100.00 in VF. Carson City gold is another mint that should be considered if you're looking for gold as an investment. I would stay away from common date gold coins as their value is too closely tied to the spot price of gold.

I'd do both. I realize $800 won't buy you much, but I'd use half to buy numismatic and half to buy ... less numismatic. Study Red books and compare them to gold charts and inflation going back at least 50 years and find a good "investment grade" numismatic piece for $800 - if it's even possible.

If I were going to make an investment strictly in physical gold, I would probably buy 1oz gold bars or gold bullion coins like AGE's, or Maple leafs. The difference between the bid/ask on bars or bullion coins is usually smaller than on classic gold. Since you said you like classic gold, a nice EF/AU double eagle should give you the best of both worlds unless you were thinking of buying gold that carries a significant amount of numismatic premium above the gold value.

Great, thanks for the advice I like the idea of trying to do both. They say you should diversify your retirement savings to be 5-20% gold and silver. Unfortunately they don't say anything about collectable coins though I think some decent rare coins will increase in value over the next 10-20 years. At least I hope so.
