Having difficulties grading this. Not sure if it ends up in the XF range or not. Using http://www.barbercoins.org/Grading-BH.html The thing is, the band under liberty is not complete, so it wouldn't fulfill the VF-30 criteria, but on the other hand, the hair under liberty is showing, and the wings are completely separated... What do you think? What weighs more on the grading; the band or the hair/feathers?

I'd be right in the mid VF area on this one, VF25-30 sounds about right but, I'd have to say looks to have been lightly cleaned at one time.

Hello, epikur, Anyone who mentions barbercoins.org is my friend! I am also going to say high VF. The lower band is complete but not bold. If you have not done so already, use the BCCS to link to the David Lawrence Guide to Barber halves. The 1899 was well struck. Any Barber Half in fine or above is tough to find. Matthew - contributing editor Barber Coin Collectors' Society Journal Oh, we Barber people are most fussy about the Liberty band.

Hey matthew....I use barbercoins.org alot. Find it really informative, and since I like barbers in general..
thing is about this coin, there are more evidence that it's a XF (hair under liberty band, wing tips) than there are VF, and it still would fall under the VF-grade?
since I'm the owner, I guess I'm kinda biased when I say I want it XF. I can settle for a VF-39.5 though :P

I think it is at least a VF-35 and maybe EF-40 but the coin look like it has been cleaned.

atlashealth, As we are an "org" and not a "com" our purpose is to educate. After 50 years I learn more and more every day. And I am only a contributing editor because I write well and the previous editor died recently. While we would love to have people join, $15 USD a year, the web site is free and available to all.
I serve as the visible presence of the BCCS within this marvelous group.
We are a small group but we enjoying sharing our combined knowledge.

The lack of luster even in the protected areas indicate some sort of cleaning unfortunately. If not for that, it would have been a VF30 in my estimation.

VF-30 IMO. Defintely cleaned at one point, very muted and dull surfaces.
