I would hope that whatever is there should be able to be verified and replaced as damaged.

That would be absolutely devastating I would imagine, especially when they're under the pressure of loosing everything before this happened, hope they come out of this OK.

Poor bugger

A bank teller I'm friendly with showed me a $50 note that had been dropped in the fire place and returned to the bank. She was sending it to the RBA but didnt hold much hopes of it getting paid on.

I would have thought they could weigh them.

RBA Damaged Banknote Redemption policy. They investigate notes and will pay full face value for complete but heat-damaged banknotes. The difficulty in this instance I suppose is the inability of the bank receiving it to credit anything towards their account straight away, because it's impossible to determine in their present state how many banknotes are there. But just looking at the state of the notes in the picture, they should be able to get most of their money back eventually.

Plastic loses volatile solvents and plasticizers when heated, so melted notes will weigh less than normal notes. It's impossible to determine their original mass that way.

Why he didn't choose the deep-freeze instead boggles the mind!

In Canada, there are reports of the new $50 and $100 polymer notes metling inside cars! It's effin' hot here! Any reports of similar news like that from Oz-land?

I don't think weighing the blob would do much good since some of it is lost in the smoke...?

Living alone, I still check the oven before I turn it on.

I haven't heard of that happening in Oz,only thing I can think of is some newspapers catching fire in a locked car at a beach a few years ago.
This story reminds me of a newspaper article relating to a divorce back in Sydney in the 1970's.A Tradesman had a Heart attack at work and was rushed to Hospital,he thought he was going to die so when his Wife visited he told her he had $20,000(+?) planted in a hole in the wall behind a tile in the Bathroom, she went home found it and then took off on a World cruise.!

What an awful story! The guy must be thinking 'how dumb can I be', but a pretty high price to pay. Too bad the gas/electricity wasn't shut off, instead of the water!

Exactly.
Then again, how many (married) men are regular oven users..a lot would regard that as the ladies' domain, and normally don't go near it -so his logic would have made sense to him at the time, and no comms. with the missus didn't help things, either

Working overtime one February in Adelaide last year a friend of mine left his security pass in his car. Temperature was over 40 degrees and his car was parked in full sun. On returning to the car the pass (which is 2-3mm thick) had warped/melted quite significantly. I can believe that bank notes left in a hot car may melt.
