mschipp : good for you, they look great. I've got a thing for Australian 50c coins. Hope they will not reduce their size just like the New Zealand did.

molydeii, cannot seen that happening - it is our most loved decimal coin. Almost any special event ends up on one I think due to it size and shape.

When I was a kid back a long time ago, we had large half crown size and similar to crown size coins with large purchasing power were circulating. In 80's and 90's inflation took its toll and coins start to change shapes, sizes and values very fast. This is probably why I really like large coins, they remind me of my childhood. Nowadays, I think Turkish circulating coins are nothing more than a joke, they're more like tokens than coins.

I think we are at a point that more trading is done via ATM's and credit cards, so the need to change coins is mush less now. I hope the Oz coins stay the same for a long time yet.

I have some world coins the size of an Oz 20ยข that less then a 1/10 of the weight - that feel like a toy to me.

I think it is inevitable that the size and possibly composition of Australian coins will change. The government will not continue minting coins that have higher metal value than face value. The yanks may do it but we wont for long.

My guess as to the timing is at the passing of QEII. Obviously the obverse will have to be reworked on all coin (fingers crossed we get a nice crowned bust) and this may give a chance to re-evaluate coinage size and composition.

Like goatieman mentioned the other day "lets hope its not that aluminium crap" and I would have to agree. like mschipp said they feel like plastic play money
