I purchased an 1887 IHC with what appears to be a double-die reverse from E-Bay last night (http://www.ebay.com/itm/19070813926...1497.l2649). There was no mention of the cent having a DDR in the auction description. I tried to find any information I could on it in both my CherryPickers Guide & Whitman FE & IHC RedBook, but could only find some info for the 1887 w/ DDO. Is the DDR for this year not prevalent, or just not as well known? Also, thoughts on grade?

It's not Longacre doubling. ONLY the right side of the shield and ALL of the "ONE CENT" letters have doubling. Cannot tell about the wreath from the pictures, but I assume that since everything else is doubled, they would be also. It also appears that the date may also be doubled on the left side of all the numbers, but cannot be sure of that until I receive the coin. The link the the cent is in original message

I like the die cracks on the reverse as well.

Be neat to see in hand. I bet this IHC spent time in an album....as in a NUMBER of year. Nice find.

1887 has a dramatic DDO, but no DDRs in my book. ONE CENT isn't a DDR--Longacre outlines perhaps.
The surface/color looks odd in places--like it's been dipped.
If it were me, I probably wouldn't pay an MS price for this coin--what do others think?

I would avoid this coin, not the seller. This particular coin appears to have altered surfaces as evident by the extreme color variation and dullness. His other coins look OK on the surface.

Nope, no DDR in the Snow guide for 1887. Plus, your rev die crack is not listed as a diagnostic characteristic anywhere. Coin has been cleaned and the color is clearly off. as far as grade, it should net an XF value, but a problem-free XF would probably be desirable.

Just saw the seller used the word 'mottled' in the title. Clearly a better than outright saying "Marked with spots or smears of color."

Well, the IHC arrived yesterday. It does appear that it has been LIGHTLY cleaned, but still does have rolling peripheral luster on both sides. And one of the reverse die cracks turned out to be a Lamination peel. Still very please w/ it.
