Onto the five and ten cent coins. I've had a really tough time finding a nice early Seated dime here. The 1837 Half Dime isn't as dark as shown - and the back of my 1866 nickel with arrows isn't as blurry as shown :)

Oh - also finding it tough to find nicely toned clad coins. Not sure if that's just been my luck, or if everyone has had the same experience.

Here's a close up of my 1837 Half Dime. I like this coin, so thought i'd give you guys the real view of it:

I can tell by the toning that the Mercury is a 1945-S!

@CaptainFwiffo - Right you are. Any idea why the 1945-s merc's toned that way?

That is amazing! I love the nickels, the merc, the Barber dime and that bust Half Dime, wow! I also was going for attractively toned coins in my set, and I agree that clads are hard to find. This was the only one I mustered. Your set is really making me want to upgrade now...hehe. Here is an old link to my set, yours is definitely nicer. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...chTerms=7070

My understanding is that there was a small hoard of them stored in these old bank savings cards. When somebody put them in the card, they lined them all up the same way. Then, as with Wayte Raymond albums and canvas bags of silver dollars, they turned out to be the right environment for producing colorful toning. They all got submitted to NGC and ended up being fairly high grade. There are a smaller number of 1939-D dimes that have a diagonal toning pattern across the obverse (the one on the cover of "The Complete Guide to Mercury dimes", though I've seen at least two or three others, also in high grades) and I think they probably were stored the same way.

Your caped bust and the 1943 Washington are amazing. Along with the rest of them of course.
