This may be a silly question, but here goes. If mint marks on Lincolns are hand punchd until 1989 how can some of them be considered MD and not an RPM? I have found a bunch that look as if they are MD (flat shelflike), but kept them just in case.

All dates/denominations can show Machine Doubling.

Pre 1990 coins can show a RPM.

If the mint mark is doubling on the 1990 forward coins, it would be a doubled die or Machine Doubling depending on the die that struck it.

RPMs/OMM/doubled dies are on the die and called varieties.
Machine Doubling is from a normal die that moved during the strike, damaging the devices on a coin/coins.

When I first got into the hobby I think I had a similar confusion. Every coin is not "hand punched"...the actual die is hand punched...this allows for human error in the making of the dies. I am sure someone else can explain this better than I just did...?

Each die received a hand-punching by a mintmark punch. Each die made thousands upon thousands of coins. ANY coin going through the minting press could be machine doubled.

Any coin can be machine doubled.
All coins made by a die showing a repunched mintmark will reflect that repunched mintmark.
Any coin can be machine doubled...even a coin with a repunched mintmark.

The two are actually completely unrelated in cause.
