So I bought this 1997S Proof Cent off of ebay. I thought I got a good deal.Until I look a little closer...split plating on the reverse above states and the motto ... :( I guess I am going to see if the seller will take it back. He did guarantee 100% satisfaction

Is it worth it to send it back? It will cost you about $2 all and all (envelope, postage, fuel, etc...).

Its worth $10 (with out the split plating) I got it for $5. Is it worth it? To me it is I suppose. Especially when I was going to use it as trade for coins for my album with other forum members. I couldn't pass this off to someone else.

I can't see it in the photos, but is it that noticeable? And is that an error coin then? If it is, then it would be worth more.

Above the STATES you can see lines above each letter...that is the plating that is split...its zinc showing through...in kinda looks like highlights but it is the plating of the cois spliting due to the high pressure strikes of the dies

Sounds like you made up your mind. You have an issue with the condition of the coin, and justifiably so, send it back. I would (if you have not already) get ahold of the seller and tell him/her that it is coming back and give 'em the reason why. I have only had to return a few items and most are appreciative that I gave the "fair warning" that their item was on it's way back.

Have you contacted the seller yet? MOST sellers would be willing to take it back and offer you your money back, minus shipping... especially since he guarantees 100% satisfaction. Heck, he might just prefer to send you another at no cost. Who knows?

Right; to make things square (and preserve his valuable feedback score), the seller may just refund your money and you keep the coin or as Dave H mentioned, might even send you another at no charge.

I have bought about 900 lots on E-bay over the years. And I am happy to say never had a problem returning a coin I was unhappy with. If you dont like iy drop the seller a e-mail, you may have to pay return postage but if the seller has a high rating I am betting he will refund your money.

I agree with Dave and CelticKnot. There is a chance that the seller may just tell you to keep it. It may become more of a problem for him if he resells it to someone else with discerning tastes like you. I got a mint set for a steal on ebay a couple months ago. Turns out the nickel had some white residue on it and the plastic cello wrap looked like it had been under water. I emailed the seller about it, included photos and he told me to keep it and returned the purchase price. So I cut out the good coins and put them in my album.
